Hm, so I'm testing my site in FF, I don't use it for nothing and I mean NOTHING but testing my site in it. I don't use Google, etc. So I have cleared all cookies and have the cookie show dialog open. I leave the browser a while and guess what? COOKIES!
From Google and Mozilla websites! *lol* , so I clear those... wait a while... COOKIES!
Now, imagine if Microsoft was doing anything like this there would be blood in the streets. hahha... but since this is the holy google / mozilla, then it's all OK. They don't do no evil!

I tried it but no, no cookies for me ;( Maybe I didn't wait long enough?
I'm no expert but maybe there are some bookmarks/rss feeds that get updated? Maybe this happens when ff try to find updates for ff or addons? Maybe there are to many maybes in my post to be really helpfull.... -
Maybe you'd notice that when the Firefox first run / updates, the browser will bring you to the welcome page on Mozilla website.
But for Google... I have no idea as we don't have any Firefox in development center. -
Maybe the address bar hits google for the autocomplete/suggestion thing they have in there?

Firefox probably calls home to check for for an updated version, undoubtedly this is done with http and as such cookies and yadda yadda will be established.. tons of reasons why firefox could be doing web calls on its own.

but why Google cookies!?stevo_ said:Firefox probably calls home to check for for an updated version, undoubtedly this is done with http and as such cookies and yadda yadda will be established.. tons of reasons why firefox could be doing web calls on its own.
I don't use any bookmarks, got no rss, don't even use the url bar, just a shortcut in my bookmarks, the only thing which is there. -
They probably use analytics, thus making google a third party.. or more likely what bas was saying about the search provider being set to google, theres no reason why firefox couldnt be checking the provider is healthy, as with most things - the truth will be mundane and not a big conspiracy..turrican said:

Both the awesome bar and the search bar use Google by default and Firefox uses mozilla to check for updates to extentions and the main client. All of these use http and are parsed in the same way that any normal http request is - so if a request on the awesome bar sends back a Set-Cookie, you'll get a cookie.turrican said:

You might need to top up those meds. Cookies arn't dangerous, and you can turn off the awesome bar, cookies and/or updates in Firefox if you really are that paranoid. -
I don't take any "meds" "dude"... I'm just pointing to the fact that an unwanted cookie is still an unwanted cookie. and I AM SURE, that if MS did something like this, there would be hell breaking lose.evildictaitor said:

Personally, I don't even use FF, I use Opera. I just thought it was interesting that FF does indeed set cookies.
An application update is no need of no cookie! So they don't HAVE to do it, yet, they do it! Which is my point. Which is... they are not so "not evil" either which people tend to promote it that way.
Edit : Now, if you think I take some sort of "medicin"(?) for pointing out that FF puts a cookie without me asking for it, perhaps it is YOU that should go off the meds... FF meds... cool aid meds... you know, like same kind of meds which Apple people take.

Forgive me for my painfully-obvious question, but, what is in the cookie(s)? What exactly are they storing?turrican said:
