Yes, but .txt files are associated with Notepad, and it's frustrating to open a text file in Notepad to discover that it has the wrong line endings and you have to close Notepad and reopen Wordpad.

Mac line endings aren't that big of a deal (no one uses them anymore), but Unix line ending support would be helpful.
I've investigated this problem myself. There are other, much better replacements for Notepad that support all cr-lf formtas. The one that is closest to the original is Notepad2. Other ones are:
  • notepad++: more advanced features + tabs, but still pretty fast
  • multipad: written in C#, kind of slow too
  • notepad scratchpad: interstesting autosave feature
  • Notepad²: macros
  • notepad x: multi-file search and replace
