* - I'm kind of convinced that '7 is pretty mature and ready for the big time, so it's not really a 'brave' thing at all IMO.

I love my ObjectDockPlus ... so much so I ditch the Taskbar and the Start button and created a whole bunch of tabs. I found I had loads more screen.

With '7 I find myself not missing the Dock so much, I don't know why? I'm not as organised perhaps it's too early so I'm still in 'rose-tinted glasses' mode. Hmmm, ask me that question again in afew weeks.

Yep I had a dual boot ... but the point I wanted to get across is that I'm not doing that any more. I only have one OS on my laptop and that is '7 !

I've got it on my main Tablet PC and it's brilliant. Vista's tablet functionality was a big step up from XP and 7's is a massive step up from Vista. Shame N-trig haven't quite got the multi-touch drivers working smoothly yet, because I'm looking forward
to trying that out properly.

I've also got it on one of my work desktops, won't be risking it on my primary machine because Vista x64 is doing perfectly well there and I don't need the hassle of beta issues when other things are going wrong! That said adding 7 to our AD went pretty smoothly,
which was something I wouldn't have dared risking during the Vista betas. Only problem there is McAfee not supporting 7 yet, but I'm sure that will come in time.

Really, really looking forward to the release of both 7 and Server 2008 R2, especially if we can get DirectAccess working as described because that will make a lot of annoying headaches go away.

I too have dual hard drives as a virtual machine is just underpants performance wise. You need a proper install to appreciate the OS.
I have tested development with the express editions and they are working great. There is no way this OS can fail, as it is quite polished now.

Being an admirer of ObjectDock, what do you think of the new taskbar? I know the start button still exists, but have things improved in general?

PaoloM said:

vesuvius said:

*snip*

Take a look at
this.

That's a great article. Especially useful if you're not used to using OSX or Windows, since it explains the essential difference in window paradigms, and as a result, the way the Dock/Taskbar work.

One thing that keeps troubling me about the new taskbar is the move away from the notification area, to the taskbar. Okay, so messenger is now on the task bar. Fine, I regularly open my contact list, so I can imagine that having it there could be useful. But
as the article states:

The new Taskbar may also at last provide a way for windowless applications to run without cluttering up the Notification Area.
This is demonstrated by Windows Live Messenger. Closing all the Messenger windows doesn't remove the Taskbar icon; it stays there until you explicitly quit. WLM no longer needs to put itself in the Notification Area just to avoid exiting when the last
window is closed. The old notification icon's menu is now provided by a
jump list on the taskbar icon. This will in time allow software to stop cluttering the Notification Area—residence as a regular Taskbar button is now a viable option.

So, if I look at my notification area now, I have just Messenger, the WHS connector, and the power management/network/volume trinity there. But if I expand it to show the hidden icons, I see a whole bunch of stuff. AnyDVD, Dell QuickSet, Sidebar, Live Mesh,
the Fingerprint Reader Suite... all stuff I want to have running in the background all the time, but I
rarely interact with them. I just don't need to see those icons, that's why I hid them in the notification area. If Windows 7 is going to push always-running applications out of the notification area and onto the taskbar
to avoid cluttering up the notification area, the result will be that the
taskbar will get cluttered... which is worse, because now I'll be forced to look at a whole range of buttons that I'll never interact with, with no way to hide them.

How is Windows going to combat that problem? I'm really not looking forward to constantly having to look at that smug AnyDVD fox that does nothing but take up space on my taskbar.

A good point there. This decluttering can lead to more cluttering...

smart they don't like to follow standards because they give some guff about working with user profiles ... so as it's in that folder Windows doesn't take any notice of it come upgrade time ... nice one Google very impressive.

page here. (Please note the Google Books doesn't work for me in IE8)

I have to say but perhaps it's an age thing, when I was younger I wanted to go into the cockpit so bad, now I don't care just want a comfy seat.

Oh, this is interesting. Just got finished testing out Ubuntu 8.10 a couple of weeks ago. Quite good once they fixed the drivers for my wireless card (Realtek 8187B Wireless USB LAN) in the kernel. That wasn't fixed in 8.04 LTS. But, my MP3 player (Sansa
e280 and a 8 GB Clip) didn't like Unix line endings in the ID3 tags. My MP3-encoded songs wouldn't show up properly in the player no matter what I did, nor how I entered the tags. Spent two full days of my vacation working on it. Guess the developers still
have some reverse engineering to do.

Finally, went back to Vista. Took me a day to switch back and lost none of my data. Clip works perfectly with my saved wma music.

I've switched OS's so often, as my hardware purchases have dictated, that I"ve gotten quite good at installation and configuration. I'm getting older, and I'm getting to the point where I want everything to just work. Tweaking is becoming a disease of some
sorts (chuckle), but in this example to follow, it still helps to know what to do.

I do miss Novell Evolution's outgoing email filters. However, I've got a bought copy of Barca from PocoSystems that DOES have that feature. Problem is, it only is written for XP (and works fine there), but definitely
not Vista (and soon you'll see why). There isn't any entry for Barca in the Default Programs list, but it does show up in the Start Menu after manually setting it in the Start Menu's Properties. When you go to the Options dialog box, there are
two buttons for setting Barca as the default email client and the default news client. They dim when pressed, but upon subsequent runs of the email client, they are not dimmed, like the choice didn't take somewhere.

In the past, that was a problem with no resolution. Now I don't care so much.

One thing Vista/7 is moving toward is better application security, like Linux has, and I'm all for that. So, because of the blocks on writing anywhere in the Registry that Vista has, it was a bit of a trouble re-installing Barca (turn off UAC/reboot/install
Barca as Administrator on an Administrator account with "XP sp2 compatibility flag" turned on/import my mail from Thunderbird & my contacts from ldif files/set Barca as default email client from within Barca/install mozex 1.9.9 on Firefox to get the mailto:
tags working (that's Firefox's fault)/turn UAC back on/reboot).

Everything works fine now. I wouldn't have done this switch, but I did some research and there is a new beta being tested for Barca, which will greatly increase its Vista compatibility (please, please, please), among other features. But, Barca works the way
I think, so the trouble is worth it.

Now, here's a question: Is there any way to see what's going on with how this program installs itself, like a network sniffer for installs? It would be interesting to see what's going on. I'm beta testing Windows 7, and by all accounts, it's far more stable
that a beta has a right to be. I've heard of lots of you, and Paul Thurott too, using Windows 7 exclusively, even on your primary machines. That intrigues me. But, how would an upgrade install from Vista to Windows 7 damage Barca's (somewhat kludgy) Vista
install?

I put 7 on my laptop sometime around the end of M1, I moved my development machine at the end of M2 and I moved my home machine at the end of M3 (every Monday morning I upgrade my laptop to the most recent build, every Wednesday morning I update my development
machine to the most recent build and every Saturday I upgrade my home machine to the most recent stable build (as determined by the build lab)). I followed more-or-less the same upgrade cadence for Windows Vista

Because he's been nagging me about it for months, I upgraded my son's machine from XP->Vista->Win7 Beta last week.

So far I've been pretty impressed, to be honest. There have been a couple of glitches here and there (for instance back in September there was a period of time when some fairly popular games would blue-screen the machine), but in general Win7's been pretty
solid.

Of course YMMV. I intentionally live on the utter bleeding edge of dogfooding and my machines are all backed up daily so if something goes wrong I won't lose too much work.

It's great that people think W7 is going to be a success... and as an MS developer/reseller, I sure hope it is... but that should not stop anyone from criticising the product... particularly in the Beta-phase... when you are supposed to be critical.

Just because everyone agrees that you are wrong, doesn't mean that you are... and there is a serious "naked emperor" syndrome that surrounds much of what journalists/bloggers write... all too often they write that something is good (or bad) because they are
then in agreement with their peers, and hence that makes them respected journalists/bloggers... but it only takes one to stand up and call it as it really is, for them all to change their tune.

That's not to suggest W7 is a shiny turd or that everyone is being deluded from the "truth" ...but questioning what others say and having a different point of view is not a bad thing... and it sure as hell beats blindly accepting what others say or accepting
what you read on the internet as fact.

Is '7 enough to get people off XP? I can't answer that. Is improving alot of features radical enough now? I'm wondering if '7 needs to walk on water!.
It's all evolutions in '7 ... perhaps it's a revolution thats needed?
However, I prefer '7 to XP but that's just my preference based on no real fact other than it seems better performing in a lot of ways. This just proves the point that everyone will have an important killer reason to want to upgrade, Microsoft's challenge will
be to communicate them. Upgrading cos XP is going out of support is a lame reason.

a couple of times. I'm not sure if they could afford it right now. Deservedly or not, Windows' reputation is damaged after Vista, and shaking up everything and throwing compatibility out the door might be enough to finally drive people to Linux and Mac so
that they have something that at least remotely resembles what they were used to.
Maybe Microsoft needs to reaffirm Windows' reputation with one or two strong Windows releases again, so that they'll at least have the confidence of the user again when they try something new.
