Win 7 meltdown...

one card falls.... and the deck collapses

it started with re-installing router - as i had to type ipconfig/release - then - ipconfig/renew to use internet on wireless everytime - on 2 laptops

so i tried to fix it - reloading belkin router ... bad mistake.  for some reason - not compatible (like on my hp - prints but wont scan - wont re-install)

so im going direct now with no wireless/router .. and in the series of reboots trying to fix it - have been left with only ONE monitor - even though nothiing changed to do with monitors.

now when i boot in - im on only the small 17"  - the 30 and the 19 are idle.. non-existant.

so...  i guess its format time and re-install  XP

..unless anyone has any idea how to tell win7 - hey i have 3 monitors on 2 video cards - one of which has disappearred and the one running two monitors only shows one

Why are you installing the router's software in the first place?

because the 2 laptops did not get internet from the routers wireless - without releasing and renewing IP

so i thought id just re-install it which didnt work

i can deal with that later - or even buy a new wireless router... but i cannot live with one display


ps - i really have used windows for 15 years... ive fixed problems like these 1000 times... so ...why cant i now?
oh right - moving things around for new users. got it. (or more like removing them)

i think i should just go back to xp anyway.. just didnt want to in the middle of the work week


edit: the point:   forget the router - but why did trying to re-install it  wipe out a video card and settings?

pps - i guess pulling it out and putting it back in would be easier...  (although not on my desk it isnt)  grr

I can't for the life of me understand why on earth you would install beta software on your main work computer. I love W7 on my spare laptop, but don't even dream of installing it on my main dev machine.

edit - in the old days - there would be a yeild sign beside the problem device.
now its just ....not there

so... nothing changed - ive refreshed devices... i guess it just disappeared

well.. tried system restore no luck.

im just peeved that i have to take apart my whole desk (move 3 monitors) open case - take out cards - put it all back....

OR .. i could just load xp (not loading vista ever again) - cause nothing changed (but i bet it would fix it)

for now though - i cant reload in middle of week. so im 1024 x 768 guy - for 2 days  ( back to the future!)

Are your display adapters showing up in Device Manager?

There hasn't been a "New Hardware Wizard" in Windows for ages, at least not one that has anything to do with video adapters.  Those are either there or they aren't.

Are your monitors connected to separate graphics cards or just to one with multiple ports?

ok so im sure ill get in trouble for this one...

i have 2 xp pros - legal. and 2 vista ult. - legal.

but... i dont really want those - so.... i downloaded xp media center.
(in between 2005)

im in the middle of a test on old machine...  its installing so far...

*i also own media center on both laptps.. as well as the versions of windows that came on these machines (xp home / vista home)

So 1 gfx card runs 2 monitors, of which one is the 17" while the other monitor attached to the same card doesn't show up. And the other gfx card doesn't show up either...

...y'know the really obvious thing to do first would be to just rip open the freaking desk and check everything was secure and hadn't been knocked outta place imo... I certainly wouldn't spend 2days without a multimon setup if it couldn't be helped, especially at 1024x res thats like ...

And I fully support the idea of dumping beta7 and going back to XP, its wonderful and better and getting really old  but unhindered by stupid changes and useless improvements, 3rd party addons that work better and make you wonder wtf has improved in Vista, I mean 7 with its few insignifcant performance improvements that mean diddly * when in comparison to the day to day battle with the rest of the retardation it brings along. Did I mention the better XP visual styles? Even Explorer can be less crap and more useful. Oh customization its wonderful.

doing that.   it seems xpmce was the pinnacle of windows.  and thats what i want to run. (after 2 years of experiments)


ps - i meant the one card on the small 1024 mon works - and the good card with 2 is gone

edit:  it works!    the blue monster lives on...  so now this machine...  friday night.
(just looking at media centre xp makes me happy.. cant wait)

I still don't get what you mean by re-installing the router. It's a router, there's no software to "install". If there IS software I would avoid it at all cost. There's no need for it.

no explanation as to what happened... but im back in 7 now with all 3 mons.

thinking i might stick with it - maybe try 7022 build with ie8 rc1
