Ooookay, now I have often complained about the state of Microsoft advertising, but the Linux Foundation could take some lessons too, as painfully demonstrated over at
ZDNet.
The Foundation asked for the fans to come up with amateur (did I just hear a fire alarm?) videos that can be used in a TV campaign. The community (bless it ) responded.
I'm not sure that the videos are really going to sway anyone to be honest. And this one:
will probably ensure that I never try it again.
Still, it does give a clear insight into what the Linux community regards as important - I'm just not sure that the general public will really agree.

That's one of the worst adverts I've seen since Bill Gates put out that "comedy" video that made no sense...Sabot said:LO-L /M8 {WooT a} LOAD "A:\C-RAP";

Wow... those two came off even more pompous and (*&%ish than the "I'm a Mac"... which I didn't think was possible.
And the sad thing... so many Linux fans fail to remember that one of the biggest reasons that for (int year = 1991; year <= DateTime.Now.Year; year++) { Console.Write(year.ToString() + ", "); } has not been the year of Linux on the Desktop... is that the average Linux user has a rather difficult time relating to the average non-technical computer user and evangelizing their product to them.
Somehow I doubt this ad will change that. -
Mainly because Linux evangelists think "user" = "computer programmer"

I don't think anyone will be able to beat the IBM Linux commercials. But then again IBM had a pretty massive budget for them.

"But then again IBM had a pretty massive budget for them."
That, and pretty smart people..

That and they were trying to sell a product and services related to it... not an ideology and lifestyle.

IBM's Linux commercials have strong religious and ideological connotations ("gaining knowledge is the first step toward wisdom, but sharing knowledge.. that's the first step towards community"). I don't even see any specific product or service even mentioned in any of them (well, other then "Linux")dahat said:RoyalSchrubber said:*snip*That and they were trying to sell a product and services related to it... not an ideology and lifestyle.

Funny. All this in response to a publicly held contest to produce a video clip themed "We're Linux". Nowhere in the description at Linux Foundation does it state it is an advert or ad campaign. Go to Linux Foundation, view the winner and runner up, then come back and have some useful criticism.

You're right! It's not for a planned campaign, it's just a community love-fest thing.k2t0f12d said:Funny. All this in response to a publicly held contest to produce a video clip themed "We're Linux". My apologies, folks!
But my main point still stands. The videos were a good indication of the community mindset, and this certainly explains why it has never really taken off with the consumer.

My favorite Linux video is the one with the guy who constantly pronounces "button" as "but-tahn", compares an ancient version of Windows Media Center to a brand new release of Linux MCE (but uses the Vista pearl just to suggest that it's actually Vista MCE he's showing), and claims that Linux can MCE automatically access all his media on all his Linux devices without having to set any authentication, and automatically closes his blinds and dims his lights.
