I would feel beyond proud about getting Ozzie to wear "The Ozzman Cometh", but that, the happy birthday theme, and his constant issues with computers are a joy to be involved in most times. I am 'totally' green with envy, but you (as they say nowadays) 'totally' deserved it.

I played with one of those, you're right in the angle is all wrong for any prolonged touch use... however .... the touch stuff ... it's the same API for Surface I believe ....

I believe that the TouchSmart actually uses a limited infrared matrix, but it's limited to about two points of contact. I'm not sure if that's hardware or drivers.

It's not really made for pen interaction. You might be able to do some fingerpainting as was suggested earlier.

One of the videos I saw that used the TouchSmart indicated that because of the nature of the IR matrix, you could even hover over the screen within a centimeter or so, and it would register as contact.

What about the taskbar doesn't work?

Jamie, be careful about installing games like bookworm deluxe .  You will never get any work done.

It does use an infared sensor matrix to simulate touch.  It's awesome because you get the full gloss of the monitor without any funky film on it.  More on the infared can be found here  at next window.

The real cool thing is the light for the keyboard.  If you look on the left hand side you will find a button that will shine a light directly below the screen.

The one thing i have yet to try on mine is turning on the speech recognition and go for the trifecta of input using speech, touch, and mouse/keyboard.

corel 14 (x4) works on 64 bit...  photoshop works too (cs)  

* i didnt bother loading CS3 as they futzed the feather command - so now i use cs (not 3)

edit: crap maybe ill have to format this and go 64  (downstairs machine)

so i can have 8 gig ram  (not 4 - 3 showing)

My Toshiba Tablet is woefully aging... fully charged battery only last 30 mins... and fan is noisy as heck...

I doubt if I have the dough for that particular model... but this computer is putting thoughts in my head...

Ours ended up on the shelf at work after about a month, then it got given away to someone who basically absolutely needed a computer, and they used it for about a month also before trying to return it.. in the end i think it ended up in someones basement..

The thing is it could be useful as a paper weight but its just too big, luckily I have a 4th gen ipod around to act as a paperweight, without my ipod I can't imagine where I'd be.. probably picking papers off the floor all day long.

so... so far

- doesnt support drawing in Painter, photoshop or corel

- art rage 2 it sort of works - it works great to control windows but this isnt meant for drawing.

- the cd from hp - ms didnt include... so i tried downloading that UI from hp - "cannot load on this OS bla bla"

- there is a factory restore drive - but no clear indication of how to get it to load (crazy non exe files)

- cannot get it to network to my main machine - same old story - everything is there - but when you click a drive says i dont have permission. i have loaded full permissions on everything - ive added the group "everyone"  every single setting that allows access ive turned on but no luck.  so all my videos and songs and pics are downstairs ... media centre is empty.

apart from above..(hahaha)  it truely IS a great PC... 

*boy do i miss xp - share c:\  ...and... it shares it!

- the cd from hp - ms didnt include... so i tried downloading that UI from hp - "cannot load on this OS bla bla"

- there is a factory restore drive - but no clear indication of how to get it to load (crazy non exe files)

- cannot get it to network to my main machine - same old story - everything is there - but when you click a drive says i dont have permission. i have loaded full permissions on everything - ive added the group "everyone"  every single setting that allows access ive turned on but no luck.  so all my videos and songs and pics are downstairs ... media centre is empty.

apart from above..(hahaha)  it truely IS a great PC...

Painter, Photoshop, and Corel use Wacom's API for tablet support. Wacom penabled TabletPCs support it because of that; if it doesn't have a wacom digitizer you won't get anywhere.

Adobe probably will build-in support for the Widnows Ink API in the next release though

Why would you want to put on cr@pware from HP instead of using Windows 7? Windows 7 has all the multi touch stuff and that is build into the system and doesn't make it slower when installing something from an external vendor... I would not go backwards and install something that was made for pre-7 OSes. Or am I wrong?

re HP ... because if you watched the demo video - i wanted that main touch UI ...which looked like the iphone and is one of the nicest touch demos ive seen

i guess its hp version of media center... but i liked it

Jamie, you are missing nothing from the HP app.  It looks kind of cool for about 35 seconds then 7 Trumps the heck out of it.  You can do a a factory restore from the boot screen, but would wipe out all of the MS Customizations. 

In short I wouldn't do it.

The notes app is basically sticky notes with a black vista gradient around it.  The calendar app is nifty and would love to see something like this built into 7 as well as some of the things in the touch pack baked in, instead of an incentive for OEM's to behave.

It may not be 7 itself, as it is the method of input, i.e. infared.  It will be after I move before i can try it, but my UMPC uses a touchscreen so it may respond better to drawing/painter.

Either way, you have already given MS feedback on the infared sensors and the use of a drawing tablet.

No. TabletPC, in general, have a recognizer *in* the screen (to put it simply). That's why you need a pen and you can't use a finger (except for the Dell, that has an hybrid digitizer or the HP tx2). The touch capability on the HP you have is via infrared cameras in the top corners of the screen (I think). Surface's touch technology is via cameras placed behind the screen.

..im sorry to seem to be  downer guy ... im not.  i cant stress enough - that if you forget touch - this is the BEST PC IN THE WORLD.

..but ...because it stresses touch - thats what we are talking about ...and it just doesnt do it for art (but UI interaction works great)

i am very happy to have the best pc in the world - with or without touch

oops! i accidentally clicked a link and inadvertantly downloaded office beta...  and as luck would have it - its 64 bit...

..if one were to load this... how long would it work for?

If "all in one body/monitor" and "wireless keyboard and mouse" are the only things required to make the best PC in the world, then I guess my four year old Dell laptop (with wireless keyboard and mouse I bought a few months ago) is the best PC in the world, too

Actually, we have a similar machine at work (maybe an older model?  I dunno)...  I haven't gotten the chance to use it, but it looks pretty sweet.

7 screams on hardware that was slow with Vista.  Add the 64 bit on top of that and you hit lightspeed.  You should try IE 64 bit.  It's instantaneous, of course not having a 64bit flash plugin helps too.

OEM built machines are often better than home-built counterparts, predominantly because OEMs understand how to balance all the various components to get better overall performance. 64-bit probably helps a bit, but not usually by a significant amount.

This is probably true on the hardware side, and definitely in the performance vs. price ratio in my experience. But in terms of software, no way, all the crap that is installed on PC's nowadays (to keep cost of hardware down presumably) is crazy. First thing I do when I get a machine from an OEM is wipe it, much much faster without all the stuff they install.

Oh dear god yes, OEM Windows installs are often a complete mess of useless junk. I was referring purely to the choice of hardware inside.

If someone's doing a "home built" it means they're after components that are more suited to their requirements; there really don't exist many bottlenecks and in my experience OEMs deliver worse performance/currency than DIY boxes because they build for the 80% case which doesn't need "overall performance": they're engineered to reduce support costs and keep manufacturing costs down. I may remind you that many OEMs were guilty of still using Intels not-good-enough-for-Vista IGP chipsets well into 2008 whereas everyone who builds their own were using cheap 'n' cheerful (yet in comparison, blazingly fast) entry-level GeForce cards.

Right now I'm using a box I built by myself, Q9450 with a GTX280 that cost me significantly less than a lesser machine had I bought it from any of the major OEMs (or even Alienware).

I don't know about this... Because of simple volume, OEMs just have more buying power than any individual. Dollar-for-dollar, you simply cannot beat the hardware cost of an OEM. I recently bought a Dell desktop for $350... and there was just no way I could spend that cash for that hardware...

And OEMs just can put together better components than me... I can guess if a certain motherboard would play well with a certain video card... If I'm wrong, I'm out a 1/3 of the cost of the machine.

You might be interested to know that I was just able to spec out a machine practically identical to Dell's cheapest desktop ($249) on Newegg for almost exactly $249.  And once you start talking about higher-end components, building yourself starts to pay off (as Dell and friends tend to overcharge for outdated or underpowered components).  It's hard to find a system without integrated graphics from Dell now, even.

Really? I supposed NewEgg was able to supply hardware cost near the price of Dell's raw hardware cost cuz Dell has to include the cost of someone putting it together.

I will have to see if I can spec a Dell's system close to the one I just built. But I optimized for low-noise, so I don't know if Dell would have a similar set of components. Plus it's been a couple of years, so the price should be halfed by now haha

Then you'd be mad to go with the NewEgg solution. Dell's offering would include a single warranty, be properly developed to have good airflow (always hit and miss, more often miss, with home builds) and is pretty much guaranteed to "just work". Home build machines need to work out a lot cheaper to be worthwhile, require a lot of expertise to get right and even then are subject to a fair bit of luck.

And I'd disagree about high end hardware, the more powerful the machine you need, the more important it becomes to get a system with well designed airflow and that's tricky with a case you buy by picking what looks nice in a webpage. And big OEMs put a lot more effort into checking alternatives, such as the overall performance characteristics of hard drives etc, which the specs on NewEgg aren't really going to show you.

I disagree, as would anyone who has built custom systems. I don't even consider mass market boxes when planning a new system.

If your goal is to have a cheap box that performs decent go Dell.  On the other hand, if you want the best box that meets your requirements build a custom system if you have the skills.
