Kumo could have worked. People could say "I'll go on kumo". The need to find a replacement for "Google" in "Google it" is a bit desperate; Microsoft can't make people say Bing it if they dont want to.

It reminds me of how Cold Stone Creamery names its serving sizes: like it, love it, gotta have it. Customers want to tell the cashiers, small, medium and large. Please don't patronize consumers

I hope to try it out. I like Live Search so I think Microsoft will do well, I'm just making fun of the name.

I know that Microsoft is currently focusing on organizing search results because thats what the average user wants, but I hope they also intend to focus on search features for power users. I often search for things that aren't popular searches, and I want to find every bit of information about it thats on the web so I need to scour the search index, and it doesn't help me at all what most people are searching for.

What I need is more pages indexed, and a more advanced query syntax. Alta Vista for instance used to let me specify the word "NEAR" so it would search for pages where a word was close to another word.

I'm all for a new kind of search engine. I'm all against yet another nonsensical renaming of the Live brand. I really hope we won't use our Bing ID's to sign into Bing Hotmail, or download Windows Bing Mail to add appointments to our Bing Calendar while chatting with our contacts in Windows Bing Messenger.

Na, they are trying something different then being a fake Google. That's why they changed the name, they wanna build a brand (or at least reattempt to build a brand). At worst this will still respark interest in Live Search for a couple weeks. It's not a perticularly risky move, they have nothing to lose really, Live Search has been doing terrible. Hell if it disappeared tommorow Microsoft's profit margin would be soaring. So nothing to lose and everything to gain from doing things like this.

It was never Kumo, only internally. But didn't they change it from Live Search to Windows Live Search? That's still 4, which is still an awful lot.

But Live Search to Windows Live Search is still Live Search with really just a different looking header. I'm not sure I'd count that as two names.

And for the people who enter search through MSN.com (who have left it as their homepage), there's really no difference among the name changes.

For a moment, there were two Windows Live Search: the search engine (also called Live Search, but always with the Windows branding in the official documentation) and the desktop aggregator, codenamed Casino. Windows Desktop Search (3.0) was developed in parallel to that, and in the end it was decided not to ship it.

Most of the concepts pioneered in Casino are now in the Windows 7 shell.

We're talking about brands not technologies. It doesn't matter that "Internet Start" was not a seperate distinct search engine, but it was a seperate brand. Also, the "future" would be the third iternation thus making this statement inaccurate - "That's two changes, not five."

But Internet Start was not a search engine like MSN Search and Live Search. It's like saying that MSN Soapbox is also an iteration of Live Search, they are two different things.

And if we want to be accurate, it would go:

MSN Search -> (first rebranding change) -> Live Search -> (second rebranding change) -> Bing.

As I said in the other thread; branding isn't the problem. There is just no compelling reason to switch from Google. I use Wolfram Alpha more than I use Live/Bing/Whatever.

Looking at the D7 video with Steve Balmer it looks like that they are putting allot of inteligence into the search and giving you the answer you want on the page and not the top of the SEO stack, saving the extra click.

In my opinion Google has gone SEO mad which effects the search results so the best/official answer to a question is overridden by the most popular or deeper wallets answer.

I'm not saying that Bing is the answer but is the search is good, people will forget how silly the name is intime. Just like Yahoo and Google ... both silly names.

Bing is a silly name but thats the point, it's draw attention so you are more likely to see what all the fuss is about ... and if it's good you will continue to use it.

Let them take some risks with this search thing, "Live Search" has been failing, the worst "Bing" can do is also fail, which doesn't change the status quo. This isn't like taking risks with Office and Windows, as I said if Live/Bing was to be dumped tommorow, Microsoft net profit would actually increase. So there is nothing really to f**k up here. There is potential for increase revenue and no massive risk by doing something like this.

Seriously, it's about being precise when trying to make a point.

One point I agree with though - it'll be a little awkward with Bing Maps et al.

The driving decision here must have been that 1) this is a new search engine and 2) the name needs to be short; you don't say "let me live search that for you" - although it's almost acceptable.
