All I can think of is, MS is just bing stupid again.

Try bing
- What's bing?
You know, Live Search
- Oh... Why didn't you just say that?
I dunno they rebranded it again for the fifth time...

My memory must be short but... could you remind me the previous four names?

It wasn't a literal statement. It was me trying to convey the annoyance normal people have when Microsoft rebrands tons of their services several times over a few years.
But that being said I'll try anyway...
- [Microsoft] Internet Start
- Windows Search
- MSN Search
- Live Search
- Bing [search?]

1 short, close 'nuff.

It was never Kumo, only internally. But didn't they change it from Live Search to Windows Live Search? That's still 4, which is still an awful lot.

But Live Search to Windows Live Search is still Live Search with really just a different looking header. I'm not sure I'd count that as two names.
And for the people who enter search through MSN.com (who have left it as their homepage), there's really no difference among the name changes.

By that logic couldn't we claim that they're all the same brand because they all contained the word "Microsoft" in the name?

Still my favorite.

Internet Start was not a search engine.
Windows Search?
MSN Search - yep, first iteration.
Live Search - current.
Bing - future.
That's two changes, not five.

I think Windows Live Search was the Windows Live Search Center, which was a desktop search app, eventually renamed Windows Desktop Search, and now Windows Search.
And what about Mobile? Will there be a Bing Mobile or will that still be Live Search?

By all means, take everything extremely literally.

This doesn't matter, but let's not say things that are provably untrue here, there's too many people ready to take anything said and run with it...

I always do ![]()

For a moment, there were two Windows Live Search: the search engine (also called Live Search, but always with the Windows branding in the official documentation) and the desktop aggregator, codenamed Casino. Windows Desktop Search (3.0) was developed in parallel to that, and in the end it was decided not to ship it.
Most of the concepts pioneered in Casino are now in the Windows 7 shell.

We're talking about brands not technologies. It doesn't matter that "Internet Start" was not a seperate distinct search engine, but it was a seperate brand. Also, the "future" would be the third iternation thus making this statement inaccurate - "That's two changes, not five."
PS - You're extremely touche

But Internet Start was not a search engine like MSN Search and Live Search. It's like saying that MSN Soapbox is also an iteration of Live Search, they are two different things.
And if we want to be accurate, it would go:
MSN Search -> (first rebranding change) -> Live Search -> (second rebranding change) -> Bing.
Two changes ![]()
And that's touchy ![]()
Strangely enough, looking at the new video, I think I may be using Bing on live search. For some strange reason, when I go to live search on my Q1, it has the orange accents, and the navigation bar on the left.
