...my mom used a computer cause of...touch!  *updated*

my mom hates computers... mainly because she cannot type and doesnt understand the mouse... but the new computer.. she was here all day.

i opened youtube and typed.. jonathan winters, marilyn monroe, jackie o, dick cavet interviews, woody allen band etc

she couldnt believe it.

she has long nails - so i wont let her touch the screen - but i gave her a pencil (eraser end) and said to click what she likes

..she learned youtube full screen button and escape button... my MOM!

so this technology is more than it appears

edit: she also clicked the videos down the right side.. but hasnt learned the search box yet ..still - for her its amazing

So where did u end up setting it up? living room? we didn't get to see it.

ya its right on the dining room table... im not sure where to put it yet. right now its front and center..

I think these types of machines are built for that type of stuff, show off to the guests so to speak.

It's a show piece basically. I'm getting something like this.

i feel like i should put a glass dome over it - and open up the house for viewing

People go to best buy for that....for viewing and playing.

I am hoping more touch enabled notebooks come out. We'll see how OneNote 2010 takes advantage of such things.

I thought my parents were just into TV and all the garbage on it because they liked it (local FTA channels), but I was dead wrong... Once subtitles started being available on foreign channels by their cable company, they started watching the Travel channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet or even Discovery Channel - more than anything else! Needless to say, I was surprised and impressed! Soon after that, I couldn't get them to stop asking me to look up something for them on the internet, so I built them their own PC out of spare parts I had lying around... They love it.

Pity I can't afford a multitouch machine, since that would be freakin' awesome, but my mom's nails and my dad's bear paws would pinch it and mash it into a fine paste in a short time period, so I'm not even gonna bother yet.

Here's hoping that PCs will find their place in many hearts of older people than ever before thanks to touch screens!

ok - i think i have this figured out (location of machine)

and this wasnt easy to figure out.  Normally - you get a new pc - you look around - you find the worse pc - and that becomes the new pc. Or it is for yourself - so your last machine - becomes - machine 2 ...  or goes to better half - and hers becomes machine 3 etc

but thats not the case with this ... enigma pc..  it is not just a pc.  it would be a waste to stick it on some desk downstairs or upstairs..

no - this machine is like - I want to be the home hub...  so where do you put it?

Obviously my first choices were - either beside the main tv - or in the kitchen.. but again - that just doesnt do it justice.
Its not just - music... or recipes...  and you dont want to stand in the kitchen - or sit sideways on the couch to use it.

It needed to be somewhere central - so thats where ive come up with a place to put it

In the center of the house right between the kitchen and living/dining room.  at the top of the stairs there is currently an old fold out secretary.. gone.  in its place will be the computer - wall mounted - and under it a shelf - with the keyboard and mouse (no wires.

Connected to wifi (no wires) transmitting to wireless speakers (ya no wires)  with the only cable - the power chord - going into the wall (no wires.) - with a nice bar style chair (high)

SO it will be a true - home computer in the wall - that ill set to run slide shows of pics when not in use (sorry energy star)

It will be fun to pretend i live in bill gates house

*i will post pics once i get an electrition over (ya im not doing electrical)

Jamie:  why is the back not mountable to the wall ?

just wondering what the issues are?
does it have the VESA wall mount holes ?
is the power cord in the way?
seems like a lot of folks might want to do the wall mount to save space etc...

its just didnt have any holes - or bracket areas to mount too - or i couldnt see any

its designed to sit upright - with a back brace that folds out.  too late now - as im putting the shelf up now.

got a nice stool to go with it ... (chair was too deep width)  keyboard drawer on ... i just have to be sure its really strong
