Has anyone managed to install iTunes on the Win7 RC? I always get an error towards the end...
I hate iTunes because it's sluggish, but it's the only way to get stuff on my iPod...

what's with the pending bit? put it on flickr man...
iTunes works just fine here, Win7 RC x64.
If you have a non-touch iPod you can use Winamp. If you have a touch iPod and no songs with foreign characters, you can use Winamp with mlipod.

Or install it in that XP mode thingy and see if the USB virtualization works

I know I know... I saw the option and thought it might actually work...

Dang! Something's wrong w/ my install then...

Last time I looked for an iTunes alternative (boy do I want an iTunes alternative)... WinAmp interops w/ the iTune install... and required iTunes to be there first doesn't it... I could be mistaken...

Intel CPU ID says YES
BIOS virt turned on YES
XP Mode: Still complain I don't have comaptible hardware

Uh oh... this could be the cause of my problems...
PaintDotNetSetup.exe - Corrupt Disk
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and
unusable. Please run the Chkdsk utility on the volume C:
This is after I ran Chkdsk...
Reinstall?

iTunes Sucks!
I'm not saying that just because this is a Microsoft website ... it' just not a piece of software that performs very well on the PC and to be honest it didn't exactly do a good job on the Mac either so don't make the mistake that did thinking that it would.
You would like after all this time they would have sorted out some of the niggles such as 'Processing file' after downloading a file taking ages ... but no, yet the Apple forums are full of disappointed customers.
I've disabled the iPhone backup because it takes unacceptably long, the last time took 6 hours! for an 8GB iPhone it's not good in comparison when I can backup my 3.5TB harddisk array to .... TAPE ... in half that time!
So why is it taking so long? Will looking at WireShark, iTunes is sending my backup to Apple at the sametime as I'm doing it and my upload is 800 Kb/s and uploading 8GB will take so watch out for that.
Is there an alternative to iTunes?

Quite a few, but Apple would rather you didn't use use them.

Sounds like there is something amiss with your install. I'm running XP Pro SP3 via VMware Fusion inside Leopard on a 2.4 GB Core 2 Duo Blackbook, and iPhone backups and iTunes on both platforms are pretty brisk for me. This is with a 16 gig iPhone 3G. Additionally, I find that the new Safari 4 rocks in XP, in terms of speed. Just saying......if you were sitting in my chair right now comparing my install with your post, you'd be scratching your head.

Have you (or anyone else) tried SongBird on Win7?
Works just fine for me.
I had a bright idea, after discovering that QuickTime b0rked PNG in IE again (it doesn't even ASK you anymore during the installer; Apple have made it worse, not better)...
When I do a clean reinstall for Windows 7 I'm going to install iTunes (and all the awful, awful crap that comes with it) into a virtual machine so that Apple's filth cannot affect my real computer.
I noticed a while ago that VMWare has a special iPod icon in its status bar if an iPod is plugged in while VMWare is running. I wondered why it had special support for iPods (rather than simply passing them through as a generic USB device) and now I think
I know why! It's to save us from Apple's software. ![]()
(If MS could just release a 100+gig Zune in the UK, I could ditch iTunes entirely! Right now the iPod is the only choice I have for gapless audio with loads of storage. I've got money waiting to be spent if someone else ever competes and has less-awful software.)

You realise the Zune right now doesn't have gapless audio?
Ugh, itunes.. shudders- probably best if it doesnt work.

It does, it's awesome, I can use my scanner (which has only 32bit drivers) with that. ![]()

Yeah, iTunes sends everything to Apple. Hashes for your music files, backups... EVERYTHING. Next year the RIAA will buy Apples data and sue... wait how many iTues users are there, that have at least one music file that appears on more than one computer and does NOT originate from an online music store... lots... I'm just saying... don't use iTunes, it's evil.
Sabot said:Is there an alternative to iTunes?
I think the RealPlayer has iPod support as well, but I don't know if that works any good. I never tried it and I don't have my iPod anymore.
blowdart said:Minh said:*snip*Ah user error. Figures
No, blowdart...
This is a pretty technical issue, I hope you can follow along...
Apparently the file system on my C: drive is corrupted, and it's affecting my other installs too... So, hopefully after a reinstall of Win7, iTunes will be OK...
Also, I've looked into iTunes alternatives... There are many... but for iPod Touch and later, the picking is very slim... And those that work required iTunes to be installed...
