I just posted this to my blog, but I've seen such great "Photoshoped Creativity" here in the Channel9 forums that I just had to cross post...

I'd like you to help us design the logo for the new team that Mark, Marie, Scott, and I are now a part of. If our team chooses one of your logo designs than I'll reward you with a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 when we ship. Currently the contest is open until the end of day next Friday, the 25th of March. You will also be competing against designs being drafted by internal team members.

Here is some additional information for inspiration:

Team Name: "Developer Division Customer Product Lifecycle Experience Team"

Current Vision: "Helping Developer Division create positive customer experiences throughout the product life cycle"

I'll see if I can't post all the entries I get so you can see your competition. I bet I can also get a bunch of the C9 foam guys for anyone who submits an entry. Photoshop On!

Updates: I've added a lot of information to my blog post. You should check it out. Most importantly I wanted to clarify that this logo would be for my teams internal use only and would not be redistributed with the product. I'm also extending the date to submit entries to next Friday (the 25th) so there is less of a rush.

Wow, great stuff so far. I've updated my blog post with some more information that includes more details on what our team is responsible for and some potentially higher resolution VS logo art I was able to snag.

Its not entirely up to me, but so far I like what Tomservo and Jamie have done! Though I generally like logos a little less wordy. Why stress on such a large name? Just the "DD" and "CPX" pieces would probably be enough.

BTW - Does Jamie do this for a living?

I design other layout and stuff and didn't think it was up to par as the first one I posted. But I'm going to post for you guys to see it. One more thing, I am a graphic design student and will be graduating in the summer of this year. So all my layout and design has a story around it. As a designer you need to do your research before you start designing anything.

That would be interesting to hear the story behind your graphics (or anybody's). Here's my offering. Don't take it too seriously though. There is an abstract concept behind it, but I don't think it matches what you are looking for.

I think I should do some touch-up on the steamroller. It looks kind of jagged in parts.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that we aren't looking to make money off of your creations or give false hope that you'd be designing the splash screen or something. But I guess you could be designing the fasion to be worn around the office and general redmond area.

The version I can get my grubby paws on. I can promise at least professional... but I'm going for high end. When we shipped VS 2003 they gave us all a copy of the high end SKU to do with as we pleased... so I was thinking of taking what we get with VS 2005, having some people sign the box and sending it out. I didn't really work out all the details of this when i had the concept the other day... but I'll do my best to make the winner happy.

Seeing that there arent THAT much C9'ers entering the competition, how about a VS2k5 box for each contestant? (Can you tell I want a free VS box?)

At the moment I don't have ANY boxes so i can't promise anything... I have C9 and other devdiv swag that I intended to hand out to participants. Thats not a bad idea however if I should happen to find enough when we have access to them.

Anyway, Digital Art is generally split into 4 categories:

Corporate
Script-Kiddie
Subculture
Crap

You "get into" practically all of them by joining an appropriate internet art community, be it B3TA (for Crap), DeviantArt (for Subculture and lower-quality Script-Kiddie), GFXArtist (for Script-Kiddie), or Worth1000 (for Corporate and Crap, although the "Corporate Contests" are worth a serious look)

Each category has it's own unique style and tone.... and artist behind it, note that the quality of the art varies vastly for all categories.

Corporate: The stuff that passes for Microsoft-grade product art and logos, for this you'll need something like Adobe Illustrator. Although Corel Draw will suffice. "Jamie" is your archetypal artist.
Script-Kiddie: The art created with someone's cracked copy of Discreet 3DS-Max or Maya combined with a load of "trendwhore" applied with Photoshop. As per usual, the typical artist is a 13-17 yearold who's progressed on from the "cracks" community.
Subculture: Gothic, Manga, Furry.... the least said the better.
Crap: The type entitled "Crap" doesn't entail "Crap work in general", its just a general category for "nonsense", some of it can be amazing... for example, see http://www.sostrange.com

Once you get "into" a category, you learn from peer support and the appropriate resource and tutorial sites you'll be pointed to. You'll be surprised as to how far you can get within a few months.

As for the "creativity" bit.... it's virtually non-existent in the Script-Kiddie and Subculture sections, (draw a girl with cat ears and you've got a masterpiece aparently), but for the Corporate and Crap (The Crap category is the hardest, I'd say) ones.... just lie back and visualise, once you've got a quick idea... sketch it down with a pencil, then refine it. Then just "do it" in your GFX application of choice. For logos, Corel Draw, Macromedia Freehand, and Adobe Illustrator are the best.

Freehand is better suited to printed media though, and Illustrator works best with Photoshop from the same generation (ie: Ill 9 w/ PS6, Ill 10 w/ PS7, Ill-CS w/ PS-CS).

Photoshop is a photo editing program and Illustrator is a vecter program to design logos. I know people can do I really good job designing logo with Photoshop but with Illustrator you will have a more free range of designing the logo then Photoshop. If you work at a graphic design firm, they want that logo to be in any size and photoshop can do that because once you enlarge the size of the logo, the quality get worst while doing it in a vector program like Illustrator the quality will not change.

small plug for CorelDraw12!

if you like customizing your app how ever you want - and appeciate working in optimal Windows "experience" corel is great.

I find alot of adobe stuff is still designed with a mind set of the mac - which is great if you like the way macs do things

i mean - i think they just recently added toolbars to photoshop - but they arnt the standard windows ones - all other windows apps use.

Then there's screen rendering, eps/psfonts which are the prefered files for illustrator (eps=needlessly 4 times regular size - psfonts = usually jaggy looking on screen

guess i just like pcs too much.

You're referring to the "Tool options panel"

It's been around since Photoshop 6.0 as a dockable horizontal pallete. In previous Photoshop versions it's been a normal pallete, usually located below the Navigator. (In the same well as the Color Picker, AFAIK/IIRC)

And it isn't a "toolbar", it's a context-sensitive options panel, nothing "Mac-specific" IMO.

The whole concept of toolbars having buttons such as "Save" and "Open" seems pointless to me, hence I've removed them from my Normal.dot file for Word.

About the each user choosing his/her best 2, well it's an idea however, it's going to be your logo! So you guys should pick one .
And besides many of the logo's have multiple submissions with only a few things different. Perhaps grouping them together and choosing from those (and then the specific one with the small changes).

I tried to make each square represent a step in the software process (code, debug, deploy, customer feedback). As you can tell, I still do not own a copy of Photoshop. This is a fairly shoddy rendering courtesy of "Paint" and a lack of an ability to draw human hands.

If it weren't for that I haven't actually had a stable system (spare for my old NT4 box) over the past 2 weeks.

Just to keep everyone informed... The entry period has closed and I will no longer accept new entries.

Our team has some voting to do that will hopefully be accomplished next week. I'll keep everyone apprised.

Anyone who submitted an entry, who would like a Foam guy, you'll need to e-mail me a mailing address. You can reach me at jledgard@microsoft.com.

Great work guys. I can't wait to see what design is chosen. We also had 6 entries from people on our team that you're competing against. I'll see if I can't post them externally some time next week.

Ok, I have an update. We've narrowed the field of customer entries down to 6 finalists that will face off with finalists from internal submissions next week. I posted the 6 finalists to my blog.

Also, if you submitted a design and want a "Foam Guy" I need your address. I'm going to start mailing them out next week.

* c9/ms - i would glady help "clean up / fix" any submitted designs by fellow c9ers if you like them but they need a few tweaks.. so dont make that an issue (resolution/ app used / jaggiesness etc)

ps - your blog shows the images all screwy - like theyve been squished or something

Good thing threads don't close after a certain amount of time... The 9Guys - for the people that sent me their addresses - have finally left the building!

The delay could be blamed on any number of things, but mostly I blame myself. I've been waiting for a vote to occur, but due to vacations, shipping beta 2, etc a vote for the winner hasn't happened yet. I'm going to follow up with the people organizing the vote ASAP now to see if I can't kick it into action.

The sad part is that I recently released an internal web site from our team and didn't have an official logo to use since I didn't want to show any bias towards my favorite designs.
