Old slippers: ..back in XP

Win7 works amazing on the touchscreen upstairs - but it has always had ..issues..with my main machine - so today - i went back to XP - and in the proccess, figured out what was wrong to begin with.

Aparently I had some 5 meg partition on C that was causing havock... and as it was in 0 and wasnt big enough to install windows - it would point to another drive = win7 boot stuff across muliple drives.

So through no fault of win7 - i have ended back using XP - but i think ill leave it on for a while - i ... missed it!

i have photostory again! i have movie maker again! i HAVE UP AGAIN!  i also have my favorite theme (luna) and everything is super snappy and WORKING.  my HP printer Scans again... The "MyBook" external drive showed up again ... My monitors no longer flash when selecting different corel files .. copying and pasting text out of oulook no longer take mintues... restarts take 2 minutes - not 9 minutes...

etc.

Again - im sure many of my win7 woes were due to that weird partition... i will load again (if jeff ever remembers to send me a real version for the tshirts...) ahem

anyway ... XP. damb.  the os that wouldnt go away.   How i have missed thee  

ps - quick thought: im aware windows live photogallery/ Automovie does much of the same stuff but i just like OWNING photostory and moviemaker. i LIKE that they are apps (not weird web google stuff)

MS - bring back movie maker and photostory as apps - with new features.

it wouldnt load on win7 ... had to use some weird old version ... didnt work correctly

I use Windows XP, I run it in a virtual machine. But I remove the Luna theme.

Don't you feel old and just wrong startin up Xp with that awfull background landscape and green start button? Don't you hate the windows update mechanisme ?

currently im happy that text - copy paste between apps works fast again.. (no long pause)

as i said - im sure it wasnt anything to do with win7 - ill load it... but for now - NO - i am happy to boot xp.  its nice when everything just works (because driver manufactures are lazy lame *'s)

i had a tech guy friend use an automated install to reload it - his xp version is customized (no theme service, old start menu, no Network service start up - sharing drives printers etc)

but i put it back to look good = themes!

I don't really have a favorite. I mostly use Virtualbox because I am familiar with it, and it's easy to install on my preferred operating system. Virtualbox works pretty well, and it has seamless mode and an fullscreen SDL mode that lets me "log in" to an OS kind of like dual booting. But there is other options like VMWare Player that is worth looking into and may have more features.

Another thing I expirement with is the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) with a frontend called virt-manager. While it may be least "consumer-friendly" VM out there, it's ridiculously fast and interesting from a technical point of view (it's implemented entirely in kernel space).

copying text from outlook (or powerpoint or word) to corel would bomb corel.  ever since they add all that "keep source formatting / keep original formatting / use default" option when pasting - corel has been bonkers.

works fine in xp now though

in general - xp is hard to beat.  it was the last hurrah os - from a team of ms stalwards - alkin etc... it did everything. it was a cap on the bottle of win95.

sorry to say it - but win vista and 7 - steveb windows - were just versions that for sure added plumbing value - but mostly just removed user customization and added layers of "WGA" no matter how you slice it.

What do i miss about 7? NOTHING... well - the thumbnails being bigger and more picturesque - but thats pretty much it.

Wait. Copying into Corel bombs Corel and that's Windows' fault? "Keep source formatting / keep original formatting / use default", is that a feature of Windows 7?

I don't know what you did to your Windows 7 installation.  I am going to have to chalk this up to user error.  Windows XP is more like an old pair of underwear than an old pair of slippers.  Sure, it might be comfortable, if you don't mind the skid marks.  

It did surprise me to see that Corel is still in business.  What do you use, Painter?  How well does the HP work as a digitizer?
