How do I get cmd.exe to run in full-screen mode, with Windows 7, when Aero Glass is enabled?

I know the answer to this one, but a LOT of people have asked me how I do this, so I think it would be a useful one to answer:

How do I remote desktop to my home computer from work?

Answering it will involve making sure the home computer is running Windows [ ] Professional or better, forwarding port 3389 on the router, finding a free service like no-ip.com to create a hostname for the ip address, and enabling remote access.

then login to mesh and use it.

or install logmein from logmein.com

I perfer Mesh as it also shares files. the free logmein does not share files.

paid logmein does files and more.

I've also got a pretty neat (and secure) setup for real RDP...  router runs Linux (Tomato on WRT54GL) with SSH enabled, and I forward RDP over SSH when I need to access my desktop.

I only use public key authentication over SSH, so (as I have things configured) I'm secure against dictionary/brute force attacks on my password (since the server isn't accessible except through an SSH session) and I'm secure against any vulnerabilities that might exist in the RDP server (since the RDP server isn't externally accessible).

SSH is really a very powerful piece of software...  I wish Windows included something similar (if only for port forwarding, which I use on a daily basis).

Occasionally (less so on Win7 than on Vista) my PC will freeze during the 'Loading Windows' stage.  How do I go about figuring out what's causing it?

I find that everyso often my computer will just freeze and i have to hold the power button for a while to get it to restart.  When it does restart windows (win 7 x64) never asks/tells me that a problem occured and if i'd like to send details to MS about it or find out if there is a solution.  Is there a reason for this?

How can i get windows 7 to switch power modes on my laptop automatically?  So when i plug it in on AC it switches to high performance mode and when i unplug it, it switches to low power mode?

on boot or sometimes after the pc has been running for a few weeks something in windows will cause the user profile to get partly copied and then never finished. it's a registry key that if left half done can lead to login errors about the "user profile service"

and you have to login with a default profile. sometimes you can just log off and re-boot to fix this but sometimes you have to go to safe mode and edit the registry to get back your profile.

sometimes this has cuased users to create a new profile and lose settings and have to re-create stuff if they did not know of the reg-edit to recover.

so far i have not seen any work on perventing this error from happening.

it can happen with 7, Vista and xp that i know of. x86 or x64 versions.

Following the trend of contrived questions:

I want to upgrade my work laptop (Lenovo T400) to Windows 7. It currently runs XP Pro. I want to know will the group policies etc still work or is there some gottcha I need to be aware of? I've run the upgrade advisor and it's given me allot of info about programs and drivers just not if it will bust any policies or configurations.

I would like, at some point in time, for a video to be made about color calibration.

How does one scan, view (monitor calibration), and print images that will be consistent across all those devices? A nice calibrated workflow.

Also, is there a tweak to make Windows Live Photo Gallery render faster with a calibrated profile? Perhaps this is a bug the Windows Live Team needs made aware of?

I know there is a Photography group at Microsoft, and there was some deal with Nikon, so hopefully there is some good information there.

I wonder what happened to the Microsoft Photography site?  The PM might have well as put up a 404 than the silverlight eye candy and link to the knowledge base for color help.  If you are going to go to the trouble of putting up a silverlight facade, at least incorporate some MSR work on HD View or Deep Zoom.

I use Live Mesh heavily - I backup all my data to it, and use it to sync files across computers. However, Live Mesh Remote Desktop is slower than mstsc. So, I still prefer to use mstsc for remote desktop. Using 16 bit color and no themes on a remote connection makes it really zippy.
