Can I get any information on the future of these services? There is a lot of overlap, and while I prefer Live Mesh for its remote desktop capabilities, Live Sync seems to be better supported. Is one going to supersede the other? What is the target audience for each of the services? Will Mesh ever lose the "beta" tag?

CKurt has been doing some interesting speculation here.

It would be great to see a Channel9 interview, but I am very afraid that the team cannot speak until MIX, and that is two months away.

If anything happens, it will be announced and launched 1.5 years later. I hope there is some unified plan somewhere to really make the live services streamlined and elegant.
Skydrive is probably the best product. It is kinda slow, and sharing is not that easy. What if someone does not have a .net passport? You'd make someone sign up then add permissions. I just think some things could be done better.

Based on some information hidden in a Live Framework demo two months ago at PDC09, I'm speculating that either Live Mesh will be renamed to Live Sync, or at the very least they will be joined in some way in the near future.

What about the current sync?

My tiny brain tells me, SkyDrive all the way. Live Sync = Dead. Live Mesh Beta integrated into SkyDrive. I don't think they will drop Live Mesh since their ad about PC is sharing data across all devices. But, I think the mesh apps would need some good restructure because I personally think it should run silverlight instead of some strange AJAX stuff.
The best result would be an app store of silverlights, both for SkyDrive and Standlone. For the silverlight apps for SkyDrive, it will do sync mesh stuff.

Skydrive will probaly become the Mesh Live Desktop in some way (hopefully). Although I never really got what the Live Desktop was for, it's just a list of folders like skydrive is now.
Device ring will become http://devices.live.com with hopefully a better interface (more like Live Mesh because it was more intuitive)

I'd kind of always gotten the impression that mesh was more of a proof of concept. It never seemed like there was any productization plans for it. They were always more interested in talking about the infrastucture than the actual customer facing features.

Indeed, Mesh will disappear and be integrated into Windows Live completly (i guess)

I have friends on the Mesh team and the news is simply: nothing to share right now. We need to respect that. Not sure we can provide any meaty content on the subject here on C9 for a while...
It's fun to speculate, but at this point that's all there is. I'd limit the conspiracy theory (should you be so inclined) and wait for the product teams to release their plans. Otherwise, it's just hot air.

The news has been that there's nothing to share for a long time now. If that's how it is, fine, but this inability to deliver Microsoft has been showing these past years isn't doing much for my expectations.

Come on Charles...bribe them with something! Take them out for drinks, get them an Xbox.

edit: Can you at least shed some light on the product vs. proof-of-concept status of Mesh?
