Before that I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, and before that, a weapons designer (I used to play Hellbender a lot, and the game's story revolved around the protagonist's father, who was a weapons designer).

...as it so happens my current research area involves battlefield robots, I guess things have come full-circle.

I have done things i several fields, I have worked for a year and a half in Stream rehab / Conservation in Northern California near the Klamath River.

I also have worked in plant nursery both retail and educational.

I have a bunch or Orchids booming right now behind me.

I have had 2 Reef Tanks with Hard coral and all kinds of reef cirtters.

I'm a mech eng by trade, so I'd probably be doing that.

Sherlock Holmes started as a bunch of short stories, and in this world of Kindles, iPads and Couriers, having your material availabe on the web increases the likely hood of it being read.

My academic career came to an end anyway (didn't like the ivory tower and wanted a decent living wage), so I don't expect I'd have stayed in that field.

I think people are developers on a step to somewhere, it's not a destinaton like it used to be. Why? Well I think that coding has lost it's cool.

I love being a Architect but I'm crossing ove to the darkside and entering management ... but I'm still coming here. Being a good *whatever* in tech means that you need to see things from other points of view.

I cannot believe some of the people who get hired as developers.

You've mentioned the Ivory Tower before, but what about industrial research? The work is more-or-less the same (well, there's less freedom) and the pay is significantly higher. I can imagine there are dozens of companies looking to hire a postdoc in your field.

Evolutionary theory is a long, long way away from anything that industry would be interested in : there aren't even any experiments, so my experimental methodology is rusty as hell. The only practical applications of evolutionary mechanisms (like genetic algorithms) are dominated by computer science and mathematics (and I am truly dreadful at mathematics). As it was I had trouble getting a PhD studentship because they were all going to mathematicians -- I guess it's easier for a mathematician to learn about biology than for a biologist to learn about mathematics.

I wish I understood calculus -- I've tried learning it three times and still don't really get it.

Or a profession where I talk to customers all day about what their like and what they don't. And talk them through possible solutions. *sigh* sales in terms of profession, but in essence I just want to help people live a better life, event if it's just at work where they spend 8 hours a day or a phone they use for 18hours a day. The little things they will look at a million times more than I will in most cases.

I've been at the receiving end of job-title inflation before when I told people in school my dad's an engineer for our region's water/utility company, they assumed he was the sort of guy who actually fixes leaky pipes as opposed to designing water treatment plants (his speciality).

Has anyone else experienced job-title inflation?

My idea of an electrician is the guy who fixes your toaster and the education I got is more in the line of Telecomunications. So if you would call me a electrician, that would be  a serious example of job-title inflation.

But you can also do this the ofther way around. Our cleaners are called Facility Managers. hehehe

Is an MTS like a 'Masters Degree' in the UK : a masters is a one year course to follow on from a bachelor's degree, usually specialised, sometimes a crossover with another discipline.

In the US a master's degree typically takes 2 years/4 semesters.

college bachelor's degree (4 years) -> university master's degree (2 years) -> university doctorate (2 years)

OK, here's the UK durations:

Bachelor's degree :

England 3 years

Scotland 4 years

Masters:  1 year

PhD: 3 years

You don't have to have a Masters to do a PhD; in the UK Masters are often regarded as aimed at gaining practical skills, while PhDs are often regarded as 'research apprenticeships'.

If he means what I think he means, no. It's an old style of professional school that doesn't exist anymore. It's lower level than a Bachelor's degree.

Yeah sorry I got the MTS and HTS mixed up.

I meant that HTS is a bachelors degree, not MTS.

MTS was a four year study after my highschool.

Then I could do HTS in three years and get my bachelors degree.

Afther those seven years, I was eager to get working. But I still want to get a Masters someday

MTS sounds like an associate's degree in the US. Although they are typically 2 years, not 4. You can use credits earned towards an associate's degree towards a bachelor's degree.
