I heavily use Metallica, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Kid Rock, GNR, and even some Marilyn Manson to keep me coding when I can't seem to get motivated. I'm wearing them out lately so I need some new suggestions.

I use silence, the more absolute the better, so I ought really not have posted. Thats not to say I liketh not the aforementioned, but I like to concentrate.

Into classical at all? I find a nice Beethoven symphony gets me through.
Also tons more metal bands if you like Megadeth. Check out Nevermore, Opeth, Symphony X for start.

Last.fm, Pandora

Try the "Nike Sport Mix." They're made for exercise but they are a great selection of motivational music (as they're designed to be).

Solution: turn off your music. Try not to get distracted

When I've got deadlines, I unplug my computer from the network switch.

Vesuvius ... nice. I too enjoy sitting in a treestand overlooking the valley below. Nice and quiet. It has it's place in my office as well. Of course there is no use for my scope and rifle at the office.

Turrican ... thanks. That is a nice mix to throw in.
spivonious ... suprise. i do have some beethoven, mozart, and some other big classicals in the mix. when thrown in appropriately they do in fact increase the duration of the burst programming time frame. they help me pace and not burn up.
Ion Todierl ... thanks. i hadn't heard of last.fm. i'll check it out.
ManipUni ... thanks. i'll check it out.

this pretty much. Pandora until the monthly hours expire then last.fm to find new artist to load into pandora the following month.
I find last.fm has much more variety in genres then pandora.

When I do architecture design – there must be no lyrics. Mind sometimes follows them, which disturbs “crystal clarity”.
When I do programming (actually have not been doing it for 1.5 yr ;p) there may be some lyrics.
There are some extremally energetic music genres that can be VERY stimulating. It can be compared to chemical stimulants. Those are so called “freeform”, “finenrg” – generally very fast trance music with uplifting chords. One may try to search for sets of DJ proteus, DJ rx, Alek Szahala. If anyone wants more of such recommendations I can write more on this

I too could go on and on and on...
Here you have just some of my collection. Not filed by artist (too easy) but by record label. Makes me want to quit programming for good looking at these images. There is more to life than int's, vars and System.IO etc.

Philip Glass - Einstein On The Beach. The logical structure of it helps me think. Especially Knee 1. Excerpt from the lyrics:
1 2 3 4
2 3 4 5 6
2 3 4 5 6 7 8
It's not all counting off course

Lots of good suggestions.
Vesuvius ... your a chord junkie too based on those pics.

I used to have a beautiful Fender stratocaster, but I came to realise (or, rather, my friends made me) that I was utter rubbish (after playing a few minor gigs). I was OK with Chords, but wanted to be an arpeggio master like Steve Vai/Joe Satriani with the soul of Stevie Ray Vaughn.
I'd be quite happy if I could come back as a talented musician, but I'll have to make do as a spectator till then.
