Outlook 2010 makes Gmail look like ​lolzkthxwtf​bbq

Whooha, After using Outlook 2010 a while, I have started to doubt people's sanity. You know, those who claim Gmail is better than Outlook. I mean, they are either religious or completely insane. It's like comparing a donkey with 3 legs to a ferrari. Sure the donkey will get you there but.

Not saying Gmail has not its uses ( I use it myself for webmail and have my domains connected to it ) but I heard many claiming it's BETTER, ofcourse because it comes from the holey Google. hehhe

I am now certain that those people are insane.

Talking of insane...  You are berating people for saying gmail is better than Outlook 2007 (or earlier) because Outlook 2010 is, in your opinion, better?

I haven't tried Outlook 2010 because I'm not insane enough to trust my email folders to pre-release software, but compared to Outlook 2007, gmail has a much better mail reading experience. Oh, and it also has search that doesn't take forever.

Office 2010 hit RTM a few days ago and is now widely available.

Yeah my productivity on Gmail sucks.  It's okay for low-volume personal accounts, but people using it for business, even smaller businesses are nuts.  It doesn't even have a preview pane.  The whole thing looks, feels, acts like a web page, not an application.

Well, it is pretty obvious that Outlook is part of "Office" package. But, for personal use, I prefer WL Mail where I can hook many hotmail accounts together (works with other service, but, hotmail has the native support).

Conversation view is the killer feature for Gmail for me...  I'd love it if Outlook could provide something similar, but it doesn't (conversations in the message list don't count--  it's the inline conversations in the message view that I love).

Until it does, I guess I'm going to have to keep using Gmail--  which is unfortunate, I'd love to use a proper desktop email client...  there's just nothing that matches Gmail as far as my workflow goes.

Outlook 2010 does this, and its actually a nicer implementation imo.  The Outlook web app does it too.  I've been using 2010 for so long that I forgot 2007 didn't have that feature.

Whilst Outlook is a good email and PIM software, it still caters to "enterprise" users and neglects things that make MUAs like Thunderbird attractive to others. For example, top-posting replies doesn't work well in threaded multi-person conversations where you'd want"Foo wrote >"-style replies, as used by pretty much every rival MUA out there.

...and I'm still waiting for "-- " signature detection. C'mon!

Its flaws get all the justified credit though.

I mean come on ... I like the new 2010 Outlook but didn't expect that. I sent the error report, hopefully someone looks at it.

When you talk about Outlook, the experience is almost certainly entangled with Exchange. With Gmail you have the server and the site, and it is more difficult to critique either component in isolation. Gmail is better for have a giant pile of searchable mail, and Outlook/Exchange is better for dealing with the now, things like tasks and emails that need an immediate response. The mailbox sizes in a typical Exchange deployment are way too small for the modern pack rat and the PST solution sucks for more reasons than I wish to enumerate. Outlook/Exchange integrates well with the ActiveDirectory and the other Office Applications.

A lot of people in business use GMail, but then again they also use AOL, HotMail, and other things that the tech crowd would never approve of. I happen to have a little addon in my e-mail client which shows me an icon for the remote parties e-mail software. It is interesting how many people send e-mail directly from Exchange (OWA) and I think we can all agree that OWA is horrible compared to GMail.

While I've always liked Outlook as a product, I will say that Microsoft stopped development of it around the time it became popular. Since then we've seen more innovation and workflow improvements from elsewhere, some of which Microsoft has ripped off... I am still amazed that we're using "folders" without paths/routing in 2010.

But there is no "good" competition for Outlook on the market. Thunderbird is fine but is is a fair way off being as good as Outlook from even two versions ago let alone touching a product like 2010.

Damn right

Someone once said that MS Office is closer to an operating system than an application suite. Personally, I'd love to get off it and use something lighter, faster and cheaper. But the sad fact is no one has come up with anything close to this flexibility.

Though I do understand that not everyone needs it.

Outlook scores good points on extensibility, but it's nowhere near as flexible as say Thunderbird.

The features I'm suggesting, such as RFC 3676 compliance, cannot be implemented using the current extensibility options.
