I like these projects a lot!

As expected, Google is releasing the VP8, and it is very good news!

Unfortunately, the fight over the HTML5 Video format among the browser vendors is going to take longer.

I am pretty sure IE team is going to make it difficult again.

They will bring up topics about DRM in HTML5 videos and etc.

or

if they are being nice, they will go along without making a big fuss since Silverlight can take care of DRM in web video streaming.

Hmmm.... the next problem will be, how to get the codec installed without efforts ?

Well, as long as h.264 remains supported. I think Microsoft and Google are committed to supporting h.264 for HTML5, looks like commited to VP8 too as well.

Actually, Microsoft did a zero move from their previous position. In other words, "IE9 will support <insert pet format here> when the user has a <insert pet format here> decoder installed on its system".

Hopefully Microsoft will do the right thing and bundle VP8 with IE9.

In other words: let's hope not. Apparently users are very smart nowadays, so they'll be able to decide what and where to get any neccessary component of their system.

They won't know why a video is not playing because a codec is missing.

That is the idea difference between Apple and Microsoft.

Apple dumbs down too much and removing features.

Microsoft doesn't dumb down enough, and cannot claim "It just works" like Apple does in certain areas.

It isn't that simple. Web pages are pretty dumb Half of them want freaking Quicktime just so they can play some embeded mp3 file or embeded .mov file. Yet if you download the .mov file it plays in Windows Media Player just fine ...

It is all dumb still.

It's inferior technology, let's hope it dies off fast.

Just like Vista Codec pack I suppose. Watch real, mov, ogg, and other freaky format all on WMP.
