The thing is, Windows7 is an easy sell. They have an existing user base who were burned by Vista (and aside from lots of printing problems and the Ultimate rip-off, I didn't find much wrong with it).  When MS has to think separately from Windows or Office then they eventually crash and burn. This is why they are trying desperately to tie everything to the XBox; it it is the only other product outside the Windows/Office sphere that has managed to gain any traction. They're trying to repeat history with the XBox.

 

But they have managed to come up with batteries that can be installed in any direction.

 

Now, I'm not the sharpest knife on the rack, but I've never really had a problem following the little pluses and minuses on the inside of the case.

Never understand why they have Kin in the first place. I much prefer a MS brank WInPh7.

I'm going to apply for a job running the Windows Mobile department: 

 - Scrap new CE development entirely

 - Port .Net Mobile to Singularity

 - Release Singularity to the public early (in emulated form)

 - Allow device manufacturers to use Singularity for free...

 - - Devices built to a predefined ratio (resolution can vary)

 - - Manufacturers cannot alter the kernel, window system, or remove basic apps (80/20 model of consistency Vs. customizability)

 - Create an App store and grass roots community (utilising C# Express)

 - Work with Facebook, Twitter, News Organisations, etc to create or port applications

Why Singularity? Because it will make us extreme agile since it reduces development time and we can roll new technology into the kernel or operating system much faster than our competitors.

Engadget said MS envisioned the Kins as a $40/mo feature phone coming out 1.5 years before the iPhone. But things got delayed. It's like it was the Vista of MS hardware

agree. I don't know about agile kernal, but, it is much easier to work with using managed OS. While there are performance overhead, but, I believe this will be negligable in the next 5 years when the technology can run those managed OS just fine. At that moment, the features and ease of maintanace >>>>> performance.

Actually this is the same for home PC as well. It is moving toward features, reliability, ease of use, "easy" security >>>> performance. I really hope MS starting to off-road home OS with this idea instead of carry over office server / dev OS performance requirements.  Performance is really important to business servers, but, not for home users. I hope they start to think about lowering dev cost on home OS using managed mothodology. MS as the technology, so, use it.

So what the source is saying is that executive Andy Lees (then responsible for tired old Windows Mobile) didn't like J.Allard's phone idea and made moves to first acquire the project and then sabotage it.

Now this is exactly the sort of thing that people like us who have never been an executive in a major corporation find a little bit hard to understand. Someone feels that another executive's project is a theat to their part of the empire so they make political moves to acquire it and then because they can't just kill it, they sabotage it in such a way that it not only wastes a lot of money, but also damages the company's reputation. How is that acceptable behaviour? If I was Steve Ballmer, I'd be interviewing people to try and establish the truth about what happened, and if it's true, I'd fire Andy Lees.

Good catch.

This reads exactly like the IBM story while they transitioned from a front runner to a backseat services house. Just insert WP7 instead of OS/2. Infighting and backstabbing as the company tried to decide if it was interested in the consumer market or not.
