HP demos printing over the internet

So here's the deal. You register your printer at HP's site, get it an email address and that, apparently, is it.

Now if I can send a message saying 'clear paper jam' and actually have it happen then they maybe onto something.

Yep, the paperless office is right around the corner.... again ....

Not really a different issue than having to clear a paper jam on a fax machine that's unattended. But you should at least be able to tell if your printer has a paper jam. HP printers have an embedded web server that you should be able to set up to view remotely.

Really? Last time I printed out code it was on a dot-matrix printer.

I printed it off because it has a list of enum values, multiple long enums. Each one needs an equivilent iterator in another class. So as I do one I cross it out.

 

But then when I was writing the book I'd print, edit with pencil, put changes into word, repeat. Sometimes paper works best.

I'm sure you're planning to recycle the paper you use and don't deserve to be called a tree killer

Only one bin? Or do you have separate ones for recyclable paper, plastics, garden waste, and household waste?

Sometimes print code for reviews, but with monitors being so large nowadays, there's not usually so much of a need any more.

I can see one area where this might be useful: iPad owners.

I can see this is useful, but a bit of a hack.

To the posters saying printing is obsolete. Printing is not becoming any less popular:

When tablets become commonplace with much higher resolutions, viewing angles are much better, contrast ratios too, then displays will dominate paper. Display dot pitch is extremely slow to improve, not much different from 10 years ago, and 6 or more times that of print. As of today printing has a lot of advantages over screen or e-book reading.

Well, they're going to have WebOS running on their future printers so there's no telling what they'll be able to do.
