According to Engadget, this is how the next version of the XBOX will look like:

Okay....
Taking a look at the watermark:
"SA Games" = SomethingAwful.com ?
"Forum" = Riiight
"LOL" = Riiiiiight x2
So if it is official.... it sure looks like a massive step backward for microsoft.
a) Why doesn't the CD drive caddy match the rest of the unit?
b) Why are there only 2 controller slots? XboxOne had 4
c) I hope that glowing green thing isn't the power button
d) What's the significance of the slot thing to the right?
e) I'm guessing the black thing is an IR sensor... so this thing plays DVDs out of the box?
Please tell me this is a hoax... it's too damned ugly. -
Okay...
on closer inspection, it isn't as bad as I first thought.
Looks like it uses wireless controllers then... prepare for extreme battery spendage! (£5 says Microsoft had a deal with Duracell)
Now the bad news...
"Memory Units" ? Uh-Oh.... no HDDs then.
-
Okay... it does actually have a hard-drive
Although I fear this XBox 360 looks too much like a Media Center PC rather than a Console-Gaming platform. -

All I care about is the next final fantasy, and I know i won't be able to get it on Xbox, so I'm getting PS3. I originally got a ps2 for FF10, but broke it and bought an xbox since I finished it already.
I thought you were getting PS3 cause it was built for linux

Ahhh, but the creator of FF has decided to write a NEW RPG series, at least 2 of which will be exclusive to Xbox...errr...next/360. So while you won't get FF, you'll get the next thing from the guy who made it. I'm pretty stoked about that. I'm not sure if it's enough to make me want to buy an Xbox 2 over a PS3 but it did pique my interest. The only reason I bought an Xbox was for Doom3 and Half-Life 2. Doom3 is out and HL2 is coming this summer. Saved me about $500 worth of upgrades to my home machine.

Transactional support, I as writing my post while you were writing yours.
In my case, I would have had to buy a new video card, faster processor, and more RAM in either case (LInux or Windows). Are you using WineX? errr. Whatever they are calling it now?
Beer28 wrote:
I want to continue the FF series, I don't want to switch to another RPG. I have completed all the FF series from 7 on, except 11 which was networked for PS and windows.
Have you installed an emulator like SNEX9x and played any of the older FF games? I'm playing through 1 on my GBA during my morning commutes and lunches and having a blast. low-res graphics and all.

I want the console that runs the games I want to play, I can run random games on linux and display them at a higher res, so that's not attractive.
That was the main reason I purchased an Xbox, I was fine with my Gamecube until I found out that Doom3 and HL2 were coming to the Xbox. Then I did the math.

Having played FF1 countless times on my old NES and then on NESticle ROMs, I heartily recommend getting FFOrigins - a remake of FF1 and FF2 for the original Playstation. New graphics, better interface, and a whole new translation from the Japanese that makes a bit more sense now, even though the final plot twist is still utterly incomprehensible.
FunFun. -
Beer28 wrote:I have a VGA to TV converter now that can support up to 1600X1200 resolution. I don't NEED any game system at all. I can also use it to play all my favorite games using linux on a PC or my laptop which I also like very much, especially the laptop I can roam with.
I have a Geforce FX 5600 and purchased a S-Video to Scarp (TV Standard) cable / box but the picture looks absolute *... I mean unusable, the colours are almost black and white and there is a flicker even with flick filtering every second. The picture size is fine but with the above issues it just kills the entire concept (i wanted to watch DivX movies over it etc).
edit: Opps, was that always a link? My bad... -
Beer, based on your recommendation alone I have just ordered a "GrandTec Grand Ultraview PC-to-TV converter with remote" -- lets hope that solves my problem.

Well, the original Xbox is like a Media Center PC. Games, Music (Playback and Soundtrack), and DVD's. The original has a Hard Drive in it.

Ok, here we go. A second shot of the XBOX:
I think it looks pretty neat. Although I don't like the wireless controller thing (battery consumption), it nice not to be bound by cables. But I guess you can't have everything.
On the left side you can see a small sign saying "40GB" So I guess there will be a HD anyway. That's great news.
It will be interesting to see, if the XBOX 360 will only be released in silver or if there will be other "special editions" as well. Like the crystal one of the current box for example.
There is also a picture of controllers around (revealed by ourcolony.net):

And somebody took some pictures with there phone:
It looks awful, IMO. But that's mostly because I'm not a fan of white.

The controller photo looks like it was made of that cheap plastic used to make those knock-off far-eastern "TV games" boxes.
Althouigh it was probably just an issue with the camera, the original photo makes it look as if has that "two-layer" plastic (clear outer-shell and an inner solid white) -

Well I've been using a Wavebird controller on my Gamecube since they came out. Battery consumption is a non-issue, they last for ages - I'd imagine the X-Box ones would be similar.
I certainly wouldn't want to go back to wired controllers anytime soon!

I use an Mx700 wireless mouse... and I need to charge the batteries every 2 nights. Is this normal for a mouse with regargable batteries? Even when I put "regular" batteries in the mouse, they rarely last longer than 3 days.
Which is odd... because my cousin has one of the "earlier" logitech wireless mice (non-rechargable) where the batteries last up to 3 months.
Whyso?

A-ha! You're the other Gamecube owner, I knew there was another one out there somehwhere. I bought mine ages ago whilst waiting for Unity.
