I've been using XP firewall with my Linksys router.  Both have done pretty well as far as I can tell.  I used to use ZoneAlarm but it really messed up Web development so I ditched it.  I'm no ZA guru so there may have been settings to avoid my issues but like I said, XP and Linksys are doing okay.
