IE7 has tabs

Yes, IE7 supports tabbed browsing. Check out what Dean has to say about tabbed browsing in IE7 on the IEBlog.

If time allows, we'll post a more detailed entry on the tabbed browsing implementation like Sam's post re: transparent PNG.

I'm pretty happy with how we're doing tabs in IE7, although the beta build doesn't have everything in it we plan for release. Even with that caveat, I think it's a great experience.

If you're a fan of tabbed browsing, I think you'll like what we've done.

This is good news for IE users, and I will certainly give it a spin when it comes out RTM. I just hope that you enable the user to customize the action that occurs when you double click the tab. Many people like it to do different things, and there isn't really a standard default out there (although for me it would be to close the tab.)

Keep up the good work.

It was crazy to read through the comments on the blog and see that people still find reason to complain. Instead of saying "great, pleased to hear it" they say things like "so what? what a waste of time, we want you to focus on standards...blah blah". I don't see why people can't be a bit more supportive. After all, didn't they all ask for TABS? And that's just one change. I'm sure the team are working on standards too.

Personally I'm looking forward to IE7.

Speak for yourself, not everyone LIKES tabbed browsing.

Can you drag URLs to the tab bar to open them in a tab? Can you tear off tabs to make them new windows?

You don't have to use tabbed browsing. You can still open websites in a new window (which still happens if you have target="_blank"). You have to actively create tabs, there is now javascript or anchor attribute that opens links in tabs.

I'm sure there are Firefox users that don't use (or know how to) tabs.

Have you used the new IE beta? can you say that for sure?

Tabs in IE sounds great, even though I personally wouldn't use them. I'm using taskbar grouping instead, and I know most people don't like it, but I've gotten used to it now.

I think I shot at it a little bit early,yes,I love tabbed browsing,but what if there was say an exception thrown in the main process of IEXPLORE.EXE,the default behavior is to close the main window which meant the child windows would get closed simultaneously,or the IE7 can do some tricks,closing the child window which actually caused the exception to be thrown,and leaving the main window open,so other child windows wouldn't get affected,if that's what IE7 gonna do,then what if it's just the main window which caused the exception?would all child windows get closed in this scenario?

Pfffff, it's not like they are going to shove tabs down your throat, if you don't want them, I'm sure they will make it optional. Somewhat like how C9ers have the option to use emoticons or not, if you want to use it, use it. If you don't, don't.

Personally I am looking forward to tabs in IE, I like the little things of Windows Xp like the way it hides inactive icons in the notification bar, or how it groups similar windows in taskbar. Or how I can group files in a folder underneath their type, stuff like that.

Tabbed browsing is the only reason why I still use FireFox.

- Task Bar (No Grouping)
- QuickLaunch (4 Icons, none hidden, notepad, show desktop, Outlook, IE)
- SysTray (6 showing, rest hidden)
- Task Switching (ALT-Tab)
- Single Task Killing (ALT-F4)
- CTRL-N, New Window
- Shift-Click, New Windowed Link

Some things you should add are new-window/tab clicking on favourites and history items (e.g. Standard Link Behaviour).

Will IE7 support a 'Firefox uninstall' feature?

I can't believe how much some people whine about the "standards" that IE doesn't support.  I read the blog regulary and don't understand who has so much free time to worry about how alpha transparency in PNGs will be supported or if it will be version 2.3.3.1.2.1.2.3.45 or 2.3.1.2.34.5.6.95 that will be supported or whatever it is.

Is it really that big of deal?

Fixed positioning and full alpha support for PNGs is a very big deal to web designers. It would also bring IE up to parity with more modern web browsers, making life easier for site designers. Right now it's easier to implement designs in Firefox than IE, because of the better standards support. Bringing IE up to snuff will mean less workarounds.
