The judging panel will test the applications on Windows XP. As far as 3rd party applications as long as you are operate within the appropriate terms specified by the 3rd party application and we're not prevented from trying out your application then its fine.

What if we used the shareware kit, but used it to collect payments for a charity, hence make it donationware, hence non-commercial.

Or something else. Excluding Avalon products from the contest doesn't match with the spirit of the contest, which is to use latest technologies, no?
Is the CPL (Common Public License) a good alternative? It is the same as WiX (Windows Installer XML Toolkit) and I've been using it for previous projects.
To what level can we customize the Shareware Kit itself. Mostly interrested in the graphical changes.
It looks a bit weird that the splashscreen says "Shareware Starter Kit" and then my application loads which have a very different UI.

I believe customizing the look and feel of the SSK should be recommended. It's designed in such a fashion that the UI layer is abstracted from the helper classes handling all the licensing and web service functionality. It should be easy to replace the
background images in the provided forms to customize the color scheme and layout.

In my opinion, as long as the SSK is used for the base functionality customize away!

Coffeehouse - How to enter the Code'n my way to PDC Contest

The issue is not just the "commercial" aspect.

The existing code licenses for pre-release technology, especially before Beta 2, of developer products restrict "redistribution". So you could build an app but you won't have a license to distribute it until you're issued either a "go-live" licence, which
is provided sometimes at Beta 2, or the product RTMs.

So yes, it's about "latest technologies" but in this case "latest redistributable technologies" which excludes Avalon and Indigo (for now).

Obviously we share your enthusiasm and are looking forward to the day when Avalon and Indigo apps can be built on top of the SSK!

Can we assume that this test PC will have an internet connection and our applications will be authorized to access the internet through the firewall?

Maybe it would clear things up if some specs were to be determined so we know what resources would be available to the apps. Yes, internet access is probably a no-brainer, but I am sure there are other less obvious resources that some developers might be counting
on.

One more good thing to know would also be whether the apps could expect to be run under Admin privileges if needed, or limited user only.

Stuff like that.

I'm having a small problem, my mistake, ... I can't get the SSK demo working because it cant connect to the service.

I'm new to webservices... And I just cant find the reason.
I checked the webservice with IE, worked well... The database (SSK.mdf is working well too... (even without SQL Server?))... But I allways get the "Coundn't connect to the server..."

Perhaps, looking in the wrong place?

Can you provide more information?

Also, the Known Issues doc says:

When running the solution within the VS .NET IDE please confirm that the port number assigned to the ASP .NET Development Server matches the settings in the Client project settings designer. For example, in
http://localhost:34052/sharewareservice the port number is 34052. This URL is visible by clicking on the ASP .NET Development Server tray icon once the Web Project is started. For the Client web services
to contact the server web services, the client must contact the services on the correct port. You may check the Client port settings by selecting properties for the SskWebService reference and viewing the URL.

Could that be your problem? Are you sure you're config which defaults to port 1956 is the same as the actual port the web service is running on?

Coffeehouse - How to enter the Code'n my way to PDC Contest

Please could someone explain how the ASP .NET development server gets started. I can run the SSK Sample successfully and this starts the ASP .NET Development Server and puts its icon in the tray.

I've integrated the client modules into my own program. However, my program fails if the Development Server icon is not in the tray to start with. How come it starts when the Sample runs but not when my program runs?

Should my program be starting the development server or is this just something the Sample does to make things easy?

Thanks,
Use of deprecated classes in SSK.Server.SendMail class. It's using <strike>System.Web.Mail</strike> namespace classes for sending e-mail, while .NET Framework 2.0 has a new namespace for sending e-mails, namely

Before I put the finishing touches on my entry (and a night of testing), I need to confirm a couple of things...

The judges will be running the Shareware Starter Kit service on the local machine, will it be the same service and DB that is available to us all and has been since the start of this contest?

If the above is true, given that it is the same DB, are our apps are to use the same information as the sample client when it comes to those values used to distinguish one app from another in the eyes of the service/DB (ie ProductName, DevID, etc)?

I just want to make sure that I am accounting for any meaningful differences between the machine(s) that my app will be run on compared to those I have already have and continue to test with.

After waking up after about 4 hours after submitting my entry I found an unfortunate bug in mine that causes the error reporting form to be displayed anytime a message is bubbled up from the bowels of my program, rather than just when an unknown/unhandled
error occurs.

Add to that a couple of friends pointing out a few typos in the manual, tutorial and EULA and I figured I would take this extension as a blessing (ability to improve), rather than the curse it is too (having to wait that much longer for the final results).

I could be wrong Gary, but I do not recall anywhere in the rules that says anything to the effect of “once you’ve submitted your entry, you cannot modify or replace it, even if such a change occurs prior to the submission end”, I say go for it.

Hmmmm, I don't know, the rules clearly say one entry per email address, and there doesn't seem to be a mechanism for replacing your entry.
Coffeehouse - How to enter the Code'n my way to PDC Contest

Thursday morning when I was working to submit my entry I kept being unsatisfied with much of what I was saying or the look of it... so, I’d preview, edit, preview, edit, etc.

Midway through I noticed something, every time I would go back to reedit a previewed post, my uploaded image and zip would be lost. Finally at the end in fact, I accidentally made my post without having my zip or image added, so I went back and quickly made
the change.

While I haven’t done so yet (other than after my initial post when I discovered that the files were not attached), you can edit a post, in so doing removing the attached files and be able to add new ones. I also noticed this when I was tweaking my post originally
before submitting it, each time you would go back from a preview, I would lose the already uploaded files.

You do raise a good point though... and there is one sure way to find out.

Say Ultra, as the latest ‘Softie to post here and one who seems to have some knowledge with regards to the rules and what not... what would be your ruling on this (or you are not the person to ask, who would be)? Are entrants able to edit their entries after
they have already been submitted, just so long as all editing occurs prior to the close of the contest entry time?
