Google is not spying on people. It indexes emails, records which emails you view and then serves ads that are similiar to what you like to view. It is in the TOS agreement.

By the way, don't compare Google to Communism, there is a huge difference.

Coffeehouse - What is Microsoft doing about GMail?

Obviously I can only speak for myself of course, but unless MSFT and Hotmail do *something* about it, they're gonna lose my business in a heartbeat. I can't wait to get a GMail account. I'm sick of all of the intrusive advertising I have to put up with
when I use my Hotmail account. You want to put some context-sensitive text-based ads over on the side of the screen for me? OK, that's cool, I can deal with that. But seeing a bunch of ugly-flashing-bright-red-and-green lies that tell me I just won a DVD player
and all I have to do is "Click here to claim your prize" is getting REALLY old, and I for one can't wait to get away from it. Especially considering that I actually forked over cash just to be able to upgrade to 10 whole MB of e-mail storage, and I still have
to look at those stupid ads. I also know a number of people personally who feel the same way. So yeah, MSFT *will* lose business if they don't do something about it.

Coffeehouse - What is Microsoft doing about GMail?

i think most people will move to gmail in a heartbeat. The only reason for hotmail is so XP stops bugging you about passport, and for an offline message depository for Messenger.

Most of us ( i assume ) have real emails, to domains we own for our "real" email.

But anyone actually USING free email will go to gmail.

The core idea is free storage for all your photos and messages that you will never have to delete. A good example of a new competitor would be - Walmart + Free Linux + free Google/Gmail machines. - Also - google actually WANTS you to upload your photos, so
they can index them and add them to global search engine ( not nickel and dime you for everything you upload)

Dont see how MS will compete with this - as they like to CHARGE at EVERY juncture ( OS / Extra storage / Ads / Spam mail lists / Included paid links )

It does not take a geneius to see MS wants cash at too many places. Revenue! Revenue! Revenue!

Cows only have so much milk to give.

I agree with you 100%. It's horrible. Even the ads in MSN Messenger bugs me. To the point that I've installed an
Ad Blocking Hosts file to get rid of some of the ad garbage on that and other sites.

The only time I visit MSN/Hotmail is to log in once every 20 days. Accessing it from Outlook apparently does not count. I have also not found any way to have more than one HTTP (hotmail) account with Outlook. As soon as I add another, both just times out when
I check for mail.

Recently I got a spam from Hotmail staff saying that the McAfee virus scan is a feature of the subscription package. In other words, I guess its removed from the free service. Wierd.

I know it's free. And if I don't like it - I shouldn't use it. And one day it's declined to the point that I will actually do that.

/Lars.

LycosMail UK offers 10MB free (but

other providers? It seems you only get 10MB, and many providers provide more than that, for less (and perhaps no ads too). Also can you get Hotmail via POP3?

When do they force you to install the toolbar? I get the feeling you don't like Google much (at least from the comments on Gmail and privacy).

Coffeehouse - What is Microsoft doing about GMail?

what if ms were to partner with google..
(hear me out..)

the answer to this post is: Use/get ALL

@hotmail
@msn
@gmail

they tried to buy them ... didnt work out - aol actually owns more i believe.

but instead of DEMOLISHING google - a brand and service it is clear that consumers and even devs like, they supported it - made them the defacto search - capitalised on all that do -good touchy feely google stuff - "do no evil"

you cant buy them - but if you could even INCLUDE them in windows search/mail to run / with you.. - it would do alot in repairing ms CRUSH COMPETITORS notions -

ya- search is hot - but people like google - WAY more than netscape.. Google has spent 5 years being cute and bunnyrabbit simple
( most valuable global brand 2004). Crushing them will be your undoing ( i believe anyway)

"we have only to remove those who oppose us"

not.

ps - ya i know... "Google is pathetic compared to what we want to do"
Jim Alchin 2004

translation: everyones favourite site is crap to ms - *insulting customers is a no no

PPS - youd have to view them as a "Saturn" within GM but that you didnt own
*Saturn is notorious for NOT doing anything GM corp wants all brands to do

Partnering with Google may be a good idea. They already have the expertise and it will save both time and money. Also, other companies could partner with Google (i.e. RedHat, Novell, IBM) and a cross-browser cross-platform search would be possible - you
could do a search on any desktop/device. Also you would reach out to non-Windows users (which probably never use MSN search).

However, it may not be good for competition, but you could always have multiple partners (choice to search with Yahoo, Google or AllTheWeb - or search them all at once and have one big search).

Lars, I have no idea about the ebay market. A friend of mine who is a Tech Journalist has one to give away and everyone he's offered it too has turned it down (I turned it down too).
It just doesn't give me anything useful, I have my own domain, webmail access to a decently spam filtered email address so what does gmail offer me apart from adverts?
