MONAD misses Longhorn

I was really looking foward to this. Sad to see another feature dropped.

Oh well, probably be 2010 before the feature set makes it worthwhile..

 It goes without saying that Miguel Icaza will have a
reference implementation of Monad written in C#, running under Mono and
incorporated into the GNOME environment by 1Q2006.In
a reflection of it's GPL nature, it will be called Gonad, and the boot
splash will proclaim: "Gonad: Doesn't Microsoft wish they had one?"

At this rate of removing components from longhorn, Microsoft should call it Windows XP Service Pack 4

Sad news indeed. =(
I've had the public beta installed since it became available, and I was really looking forward to this. The command prompt in XP is woefully inadequate for anything beyond the most basic tasks, and MSH really looked like it could have one-upped most UNIX shells available today.

That comment from slash dot is so indicative of most slashdotters... so far off in fantasy land, they can't smell the crap they're buried in.

I found one reference in that to the term "Monad"

so he said in detail:
"It will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver. "

thats not a - it won't ship for xx or yy
just that he expects it to take that long to get to the level of functions / features / and so on that they have in mind....

Like .Net had to go thru dev/beta/v1/v1.1/v2
it's been about 5 years now... now they are very close to the vision of .net as a shipping relaity in a number of products and uses...

I wonder if Mary Jo got this a little bit wrong. I was in the Monad breakout session at TechEd 2005 yesterday, MGT320 Next Generation Command Line Scripting: Monad by Jeffrey Snover. The room was packed out, with many more, like me, sitting on the floor. It was a big room, so I'm guessing there were around 750 people in there. It was great session, and Jeffrey did a great job. Many demonstrations drew spontaneous applause.

The next Beta of Monad is due out in a few weeks, and according to Jeffrey, Monad will appear in WinFX (the framework) rather than Longhorn (the operating system). That means that when it releases, Monad will be available on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems, too.

So maybe Mary Jo got confused or something. The distinctions between WinFX and Longhorn, and what's where on any given day, certainly can be confusing at times. The message I got loud and clear yesterday is that Monad is coming to a platform near you as part of the Longhorn Wave.

She *IS* confused and then some....

I read some of the stuff and very soon realized that she just seems to spew forth attention grabbing titiles and fills them with almost-right mis qoutes and FUD-O-Matic.

A while back she was claiming that it was some kind of big news and major change that LH was not 100% based on .Net
before that I recall when she was writing about LH delays and missed dates -- BEFORE THE LAST PDC! like way before it was still like Alpha 2 or some such...

so overall her record in my view is one next to the tabloid reports of UFO's and such...

Hey Microsoft, I have a tip to get more functionality into Longhorn -- Go down to the local Apple store, buy some OS X for 86x and stick some stickers over the parts about Apple. - "Windows OS X!" - Here is what that might look like:

That's fine.  But I suspect that you'll be pleasantly surprised come next year.

I'm already surprised by some of Longhorns features, for example it not being compatible with my hardware.. I think that's a great part of it, do you not?
