Microsoft are being teases. The beta didn't start yet either, but they've released screenshots, which made everyone cream their pants and run to MS Connect.

Would be a slap in the face though for the beta testers...

The beta has started (read neowin, msbetas.org, activewin), some of the testers already got their link / email re. the beta download. Many are still pending verification for the beta status.

The MSND info is at many places, even at http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista (the new site for developers)

I'm pretty sure it'll hit the MSDN /Technet downloads today...the links and info on this are scattered all over the place on msdn and microsoft (not to mention news sites/forums)

I read that they are staging the beta in chunks of people so the servers dont explode.

Any idea what the checked/debuged versions are?

Also, the development kit - does that have Avalon/Indigo or the SDKs are already in the Longhorn beta 1 image (like part of the OS)?

I know these are silly questions since most of us are still downloading, but if any of you came across this info.....

checked/debug versions run slower and emit debugging information, so you can see at which point things crash.

More suitable for low level core developers.

So, how are you guys going to run this build?

I'd be doing the same as I did with LH 5048 - create a VPC with enough space, and have VS 2005 installed on a separate virtual hdd so the original image is not HUGE. Since all the SDKs needed (WInFX) are already in the OS, it'll be easy working on it.

I think the Aero / glass effects don't quite work well on VPC (even if your host PC has a good hardware).. if that's the case, I'd have to wait some time for those UI effects

Get a seperate harddisk, or put it on another partition...
I put it on an isolated partition.

I didn't get invited YET to Beta1 (Still hoping for Beta2) but once I get invited it will be my primary OS. I've been doing that since Windows ME.
