I read several developer blogs and have noticed in the last couple
of weeks all of them have been more absent than normal.. Charles
also said something about him being particularly busy at the moment
with a project.

So are deadlines approaching all the projects or is it just a coincidence
that all the Microsoft developers have gone into hiding all of
a sudden?

Erm... Not EOY, not review time... Several major products are in beta right now (Vista, Office, IE, a number of server products, etc)... But, I'm not aware of anything huge happening right now in particular (at least nothing that would cause ALL MS employees to be nose to the grindstone)...

Several people I know who work for Microsoft went to Redmond last week for what you might call an internal PDC.

The presentations were the beta 2 versions of what we will hear in LA in September.

Reviews, end of milestone, vacations, funerals, etc.  Lots of people were out of town.
