It's still huge, but it's somewhat less intolerable that way.

It remains to be seen if this will be in the advertising guidelines, if those will be enforced and if there will be some strict monitoring to close loopholes.

And at least these aren't in your face all the time. It's more like magazine ads this way.

Also, websites have been doing a lot more offensive stuff with regards to ads than this for a long time now.

As long as they don't start showing up in the default apps, I don't see them being any more of an issue than you get on the web today (or in some apps - WLMessenger for example).

If TV is any indication, eventually even pay apps will have advertising. See every cable channel as proof.

Here in the UK, I pay for the BBC through the TV licence (but the BBC has no adverts), and I watch other terrestrial TV channels that have adverts (but don't get any of the TV licence), but I refuse on principle to get Sky TV, as you have to pay a fee and sit through adverts.

Personally I think the in-box apps shouldn't have any form of in-place advertising, it just seems tacky. That said I can't imagine spending much time actually looking at the music player app (as opposed to just having it in the background), which is surely the common case, so I can't imagine in-app advertising being a particularly good option for either consumer or advertiser there.

Yeah ... that is the saving grace of the music app for me. Even though I don't like how it's laid out, I still find myself using it because search + the popup that appears when you use the volume controls are the only ways I actually want to interact with it most of the time and those do work well.
