I thought the same thing, but I did some rudimentary calculations beforehand and it came down to roughly the same amount of money, if I spread it out over 24 months. I suppose I could've saved 2 or 3 euros per month if I went the SIM only route, but didn't think it was worth the hassle.

Maybe it was that I managed to subscribe right before providers upped there prices, I'm not sure.
