We're rolling out a solution that can search all file types which has been a huge headache. I like how Windows Server 2008 doesn't have the ability to search *.dat files, or *.xml (correctly) but if you want to find your e-mail, it works great - what genius thought that was a good idea?

At least Windows ships with Power Shell. Still think Windows Search is an embarrassing product.

I hope the Windows Search team leave for Facebook, and they hire some interns instead. They cannot do any worse.

Speaking of which we've just about to deployed a Windows Search alternative throughout the company, which more or less is a piece of software that, you know, searches files in a folder of your choosing. It is almost as good as Windows 95's search before the "improvements."

You are, of course, aware that Google Desktop Search is a thin UI on top of Windows Search, right?

If that is true (and frankly I don't think it is) it is inconsequential.

Yup. It is so bad that GDS and other desktop search products use it as their indexer and data/metadata extraction engine.

One other thing, considering that I worked on that and have a pretty good knowledge of how it all works, claiming "If that is true (and frankly I don't think it is)" is almost the same as calling me a liar

Sorry, but that just sounds just really doesn't make sense from an engineering standpoint. You got proof of this?

Of course I got proof. Install GDS on Windows. Open task manager. Look for Google's indexing service, protocol and format handlers.

Go on.

Still looking?

No. It was pretty easy to spot the "GoogleDesktop.exe" in the process manager. It even conveniently provides how much percentage complete it's indexing is. Btw, it's 6% done as of the time of this writing.

I do use Google Desktop on a regular basis at work. But I never even thought of installing on my Windows machine at home for some reason, despite it's extreme usefulness (on Linux, at least). I'm glad it doesn't seem to be a thin UI over Windows Search, so it might be worth keeping it on. Thanks for the suggestion.

PaoloM wasn't entirely wrong though. You CAN configure Google Desktop to use Vista/7's indexer, but it's recommended (and apperently default?) setting uses Google own custom indexer. I'm sure this is what ManipUni was talking about.

It lists Google's own indexer as "Enchanced Content Indexer", noting a bulletpoint of additional features. Not exactly the best advertisement for Windows Search.
