Do you have IE9, Opera, Chrome installed? Perf comparison

Real world test. This site is incredibly heavy for some reason. I can't use it at all on IE8 and IE10 preview 1 is also choking.

Which browser do you find fastest to actually perform activities on the site:

1: Starting and stopping the embedded youtube video (IE10 p1 freezes for couple seconds)

2: trying to scroll the page just after starting the video in order to read some comments while listening to the speech in the video (can you start scrolling the page immediately and is the scroll fluid or jerky)

3: Selecting text of the last comment and right clicking to open context menu

4: View source and scrolling & selecting stuff in the source

There's your answer right there. 800+ comments pulled from Disqus through Ajax calls. And no paging.

@cbae:Definitely bad design, but how does Chrome handle it? Chrome has no stuttering and acts as if there was one comment displayed instead of 813.

IE Team should be looking at this.

For me, IE9 took a few seconds to load, but once completed there was no stuttering.

Paging is a concept I don't like when you want to quickly and efficiently eye through all the comments/content just like flipping through a physical book to find an image or particular page in a book. This will take just a second and not multiple actions (clicks). The only problem is when there's so much data that the legacy-scroll bar idea stops working (eg.one pixel movement of scroll bar equals hundred pages scrolled). So that needs to be also rethought to scale.

Yeah, it shutters on my IE9. Probably because they have to raise onResize events 813 times, a feature that is only supported in IE.

Both WPF and IE behave this way even if you have the elements in collapsed + disabled in WPF and hidden in IE. They are still part of the visual tree and will have performance hit. Kind of odd to be honest. After it is shown, it also does a lot of other stuff as well.

Chrome -  I was able to watch the video while the comments were loading but it only took a few seconds for everything to load.

Firefox 4 - Just slightly slower than Chrome but not much.

I don't have IE9 installed.

IE8 - Slowest of the 3 browsers I tried but still only took a few seconds before I was able to watch the video and see all the comments.

In my opinion, all 3 were acceptable.  Having to wait a few seconds while a page loads is no big deal.  Speed is nice, but it isn't necessarily always the most important thing.
