In "The Wedding of River Song" (2011), it is stated that the Doctor's true name is a secret that must never be revealed.
Its meant as more of a riddle than that. We're told when the question is asked, silence will fall.
Sounds like what Wittgenstein wrote -- that what cannot be said must be passed over in silence... turned into a kind of literal thing.
Moffat has suggested in interviews that his name is just "The Doctor" and that the word "doctor" in the English language is a reference to him, The Doctor. ie. the answer to the riddle is that there is no riddle.
