On another note, if you factor in the PC decline with an increase in Windows profit...wouldn't that sort of suggest a pretty good percentage of licenses that were not sold with machines?

Interestingly, Microsoft put $2.5B into R&D for the quarter.

Apple, while doing over 2x the revenue of Microsoft, put in $1 billion.

It must be nice for Apple to put in so little effort (comparatively) and be so well-recognized (comparatively) as being "innovative".

But you see, that's the growth for the trailing 12 months. They reversed the trend this quarter. Keep that up and good things happen.

You need to consider that Windows 8 launched at the end of the year (with a decent pent-up demand, so sales of Windows 7 were low) and Office 2013 will launch shortly, so pretty much anyone who wanted to buy Office is waiting on the new version.

Once you take that into account, these numbers are in stark contrast with the "reality" that we are present daily from all the pretend analysts and regular trolls...

Except...now we'll get even more nagging and trolling because it's even more clear that MS will certainly not listen to a lot of the complaints because they simply do not need to.

There was basically nothing coming out, and Ballmer still managed to rack up tons of profit and higher profit margin than its competitors. This just goes to show you why Ballmer is still the best Cash Earning Officer for the company, despite he jumps around like a mad man with terrible taste in technology. And with so much criticism in Win8 and less market value than competitors at one point, Microsoft revenue, profit, profit margins, is still unmatched. It is a marvel to behold.
