I like the Expression tools, but I am a developer and they were really aimed at Designers who were/are just ensconced in their use of Photoshop.
Maybe Microsoft is planning on acquiring Adobe.

- I got lost in the roadmap of developer/designer tools from Microsoft, anyone care to point me to a simple diagram of the offerings?

I use Design a lot, its very useful for me both for web design work and also for exporting things for WPF/WinRT apps. I hope they don't abandon the product.
I've transitioned from one Microsoft product to another, Image Composer => PhotoDraw => Expression Design. I also use Adobe Illustrator, but I've liked the Microsoft products better for most purposes, Expression Design being the best.
