The tragic thing there is that most of the problems with Google Docs are also problems with Office 365.

Well Ofice 365 pushes the use of the rich Office apps locally too, so it's not quite the same thing. And Microsoft don't have quite the same reputation as Google for simply scrapping products that aren't succeeding (where succeed is defined by the amount of advertising revenue generated).
