Coffeehouse - Fuggly new Visual Studio UI

I guess I won't be changing my avitar anytime soom with moves like this. One thing I liked about VS 2010 over Eclipse was its sharp UI. Looks like they wanted a more "Eclipse" look this time around. Why not get rid of color syntax highlighting while you're at it Microsoft. Those visual cues are just harshing my mellow.

Ahhhh the good ol' days....

Coffeehouse - Fuggly new Visual Studio UI

Personally, I like it. I prefer this gray over the blue/purple of the past few iterations, but color choices are highly subjective. Far more important is the removal of unnecessary chrome, toolbars and simplifying the overall UI. This will allow me to better concentrate on the code... the important bit when using an IDE.

I don't think it looks like Eclipse, maybe the color scheme or something. But really it is Eclipse that needs a UI refresh, preferably from some hipster RoR designer. And no, not just changing the color scheme around like Aptana Studio does. I want to feel trendy and cool when I use Eclipse.

That way us Eclipse developers can point at laugh at the ugly Visual Studio instead of the other way around. I look forward to it.

Coffeehouse - Fuggly new Visual Studio UI

When I compared it to Eclipse I was suggesting it shares its blandness.

They've stripped out all of the color and chrome which for me makes it more difficult to scan the screen and find what toolbar item or tool window I'm looking for. I actually do still use the mouse sometimes for more obscure commands. It's all one great big blurred grey mess with a half-assed implementation of the metro-like type faces.

Reminds me of WebMatrix. Hmm.... usually I moved to VS Web, so, I couldn't say how comfortable to read gray fonts. But, in my own experience on my site, the casual pages is better with dark gray fonts, it is smoother and more inviting. But, in a page talking about tech, the extra contrast just feels right. I don't know why though. There is that sense of clarity, not just visually, also content wise. It is my own psychology conclusion.

Coffeehouse - Fuggly new Visual Studio UI

Somehow I don't buy that a "Windows Store blog" is the last word on the RTM look.

But the Windows 8 logo thrown around looks like something from the bad days (as in, bad days of early Windows, DOS is still alive and well in DOSBOX). And that look would be in line with the look of the logo. BTW Back in the day, according to wikipedia, Microsoft was copying DR-DOS features from Digital Research. I didn't even realize how severely unusable MS-DOS was until they added those features as I wasn't using MS-DOS until v6.

I think there could well be some merit to the "cycle" of releases. Eg. Introduce a ton of new stuff in Vista and leave the fixing of critical usability issues & polishing to next release. For all I know, Vista users still have that completely broken explorer. I'm fully expecting Windows 8 to be a "skip" release. There may be few nice features here and there but they will miss some really annoying things that people complained loud about prior to RTM and then when people see they don't bother fixing those *obvious* issues then who's going to buy it? I'm certain this forum is biased toward buying Windows 8 tablet but reality is, the mass market is going to skip Windows 8 tablets. What they won't be skipping is the new display in Ipad 3. No silly ultra-wide aspect ratios. And according to experts you don't need even a 20/20 vision to be able to see the improvement in going from low DPI to high DPI.

Hint: If you make your screen black, then put a single gray/white pixel on it and can see a rectangular shape, then your display is too low DPI. I don't see ugly rectangular shapes on my CRT for instance. Not even if I get real close and tried. So obviously low DPI LCD's suck.

Well I looked at few more blogs and looks like this nearly monochromatic look may be around for RTM.

The reason for this is actually very simple:

PC OEMs can't afford all the new tablet hardware features without cutting cost somewhere. So they've apparently decided to go from 6 bit dithered TN panels to 4 bit.

In particular, allowing larger than 1 bit palette in the icons would be a big no-no.

They need to take a lesson from Windows 8 and XBox. The pure clean flat metro works well on a small surface like a phone, but for a larger screen like a monitor or TV, you can have subtle gradients and shadows to break up the expanse without leaving the design principles of Metro.
