Has anyone started a "real" Windows 8 application yet?

I'm talking about an actual team-sized app. We're about to start one soon for Microsoft and the part that sucks is you can't use Windows 7, you have to do dev in Windows 8 itself. Which means setting up VMs with Windows 8 and VS11.

My only concern is source control. Is there a way to run VS11 with TFS2010, so Windows 8 development can be in a real source control? I know the VS11 package comes with TFS11, but I doubt we'd have time to set that up.

@Harlequin: Hasn't the current version of VS been able to work with previous versions of TFS before? You could always install TFS Explorer 2010 on it's own and use the shell extensions in the TFS Power Tools to do your source control operations.

Think the beta is due quite soon. 

Are you starting dev using the Dev Preview or have you got something a little later to work with?

@kettch - Still doing research. Just can't find anywhere if VS11 Dev Preview will work with TFS 2010. Will look into it more, and get our IT guys to do the same.

@Ian2 - Well "for MS" doesn't mean they tell us anything they don't tell anyone else, they're just as closed lipped
Haven't started anything just yet, just upon reading MSDN sites it seems like as of right now you can only do Win8 Metro stuff in Windows 8 Developer Preview and using the VS11 Developer Preview. Have to read up on it more.

Unless there is a way to do things "manually" in Windows 7 and with VS2010 and push it via a USB cable to a Windows 8 tablet. Kind of like how you can with WP7 development.

@Harlequin:Maybe just split the project into isolated chunks by defining interfaces upfront then let each dev do their own thing - down the road (beta timeframe) bring it all together under TFS and formalise things.

@Harlequin: I would wait for the beta. I have bought a new SSD to install it on.

From a financial standpoint it is definitely not worth your team getting up to speed on something that is a developer preview. I reckon the beta will be out in a few days, end of January at the most.

There is a deathly silence in all the blogs, and even here on channel 9....beta....cometh!

@vesuvius - This is an internal-only Microsoft Win8 app. Gotta start dogfooding as soon as possible

Will just have to see if VS11 can connect to TFS2010, if so then I guess we should be good to go.

@Harlequin: I'm trying to create a Metro app in Windows 8 but there are some nasty bugs that prevent me from making any progress with it. Just two-way databinding a list to a control is already a big issue.

I don't think those ListView and other Win8 HTML controls are portable to the "real" web.

Who gave you this impossible combination of requirements? Microsoft?

I think some of the CSS3 ms grid stuff might be able to port to a "normal" web project, but I don't think the rest of it is like the "WinJS.UI" stuff. Tough part is explaining it....hehe

If there's better wording that "impossible combination of requirements" I'd love to have it so I can use it

Unless I missed something, it seems that the only parts that are unique have to do with the UI, so as long as you are using some kind of UI interchangable design pattern (MVP, MVC, etc.) then you should expect to have to write to versions of the UI without needing to rewrite anything else.

I guess you wouldn't have to use the fancy WinJS stuff on the backend so you could have similar JavaScript on that side of things, but we wouldn't be able to use things like:

Everything in the UI would need to be "plain" and done old skool.

Problem is that it's now not a "real" Windows 8 Metro application, since you don't get the build in animations and stuff, it would be very boring and basic.

I would like to write planogram software that utilizes the camera. Almost all large stores have their shelf plans in software. And I have not seen any shelf management software uses augmented reality.

Not that I'm capable of writing the software by myself, but at least I can dream or subcontract.
