I have one question. I am using Win 7 on my laptop form last 1.5 years, now i want to upgrade it to win 8. I know that its gonna cost me $40 but my concern is do I need to have a backup of all my data before upgrading or what? Will my data be lost or it just upgrade windows files? I have to re-install all of the programs which are stored in program files in windows drive? Kindly do let me know what to do?

I upgraded from Win7 to Win8 and didn't lose any data -- I would recommend backing up beforehand in any case, but an in-place upgrade went smoothly.

Well that's good. Because I really don't want to re-install everything. If it doesn't loose any data, then its good. You also didn't loose windows drive program files? Right?

Also I am using Win 7 Home edition, But i want to upgrade to Win 8 Ultimate edition. Is it possible? If yes, then how to do it?

I havent tried upgrading from windows 7 home to win 8 ultimate, but have tried vista home to win 7 ultimate and win7 to win 8 upgrades all of which migrate the installed programs to new OS.
If you have a lot of programs installed the process takes a lot of time ( hours...somebody even reported 20 hours in one of the forums). The upgrade process nornally gives a compatibility report in advance and is useful in most scenarios.
Before upgrade try to install the latest BIOS and driver versions on the old OS as it is one of the problems faced during the upgrade.
Hope this helps.

@flyingcolourin: The upgrade will go through your installed software and point out anything that might be a problem and give instructions on what's needed to fix the issue before you perform the upgrade.
The only software that needed any repairing was a virtual CD that I sometimes use, and all I had to do was re-install it. Everything else I had was fine and just works in Win8.

My internal tv tuner doesn't work properly in Win 8 though it worked fine in Win 7. I've reverted to an usb tv tuner that seems to work fine more often than it did in Win 7, not too much of a difference then.

As far as I know, the only retail x86 versions of Windows 8 are "Windows 8" and "Windows 8 Pro". From what I read, everything but Windows 7 Enterprise can be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, so you should be alright. I didn't try that myself though.
What I did try was an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 8 Pro on two machines and that went quite well.

You can get the Upgrade Assistant as a check for your system by going to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8 and clicking the download link. It will tell you if there will be problems before you pay for the upgrade.
