Joe Belfiore vs irate nerds

I was just looking at the comments for The Count Down Show, and boy does Joe know what to say to piss people off. If nothing else, I'm glad to see some new registered users for Channel9.

I should be getting an Arrive in the next week, or somewhere about then. And I am looking forward to having a phone with a clean API and a limited number of features.

I often think I'm the only early adopter who doesn't care when NoDo gets delivered. The phone does for me what I bought it for.  I've never once missed having 'Cut and Paste' and the apps I use seem to get frequent updates.

This is what happens when you get carriers and phone makers involved in the loop. I suspect behind the scenes Microsoft will be getting ready to renegotiate terms... or maybe thats what the Nokia merger is for, getting better control over the distribution of OS updates.

Now of course if we get the same issues when it comes time to deliver HTML 5 support, then I may be a little upset.

Honestly, people are perhaps making too big a deal out of the whole update scenario, but that whole dismissive attitude in the show rubbed me the wrong way too. They could've at least acknowledge that there are a lot of early adopters who are unhappy about the way updates are being handled.

People change device however after 1 or 2 years. Do not need to block the update Carrier is MAFIA

@Charles: Well, good to have a response from him/the WP7 team on the actual criticism at least. That goes a long way.

Hard to imagine Microsoft making more mistakes on this W7P thing and still surviving. Cannot tell if it is down to too much meddling by Microsoft management or just down to incompetent people running it.

Microsoft should really just start giving out $500,000 and going completely hands-off on these projects. If they're profitable they survive, and if not then they die as they deserve.

JoeB asked us to put it into perspective that Windows Phone has only been out 4 months... May I ask JoeB to put it into perspective that Apple released  iPhone version 4, and MS released Windows Phone version 0.9 ?

That whole "It's brand new" attitude needs to go. They need to compete with what's out now, not what was out in 2007.

I really think MS is in this thing for the long haul... the phone / tablet platform IS the next computer and MS is ESSENTIALLY a software company... But they have NO leverage with the carriers when they sell so few units... This is only the process of bending over and taking it for the time being

I wonder if the WP7 updates are slow because Windows 8 will be on the next round of smartphones and they're putting all of their effort towards that.

@Bas: I agree, this its new attitude will kill them. I already think the lack of multitasking for months is hurting them. People are entering two year contracts with platforms that are much more flexible to the end consumer.

Sad too, because WP7 has great battery life compared to Android (comparing similar handsets). But one thing I am surprised about is the update process. It was hyped that since Microsoft would provide the update, that there would be no fragmentation issues. But this latest issue is pretty sad.

And there aren't any fragmentation issues. Having to have carriers test and approve the updates doesn't introduce fragmentation.

Microsoft is only partly to blame for the slowness of the updates. Both OEM and carrier testing seem to be the biggest factors in scheduling of the updates.

To be honest if Microsoft decided to release this OS unfinished rather than waiting until it was ready then that is their fatal mistake. They will continue to be grouped with the horrible other Windows Mobile operating systems.

Two things that make Apple who they are:
 - Polish, polish, and then polish some more!
 - Release it when it was ready!

Two lessons Microsoft could do well to take on board.

PS - Apple are far from perfect.

 There's no such thing as "finished" or "ready". In fact, what you posted about Apple is 180 degrees wrong. They don't wait until they have every feature they'd like to have. They wait until they have a small subset of features they think are enough to have a compelling product, and polish just those. By contrast Microsoft in the past has been criticized for trying to cram too many features in too early (with e.g. WPF), but with WP7 they tried to take a more Apple-like approach by limiting the initial feature set (whether or not they were right in their judgement of what subset of features would make a compelling product).
