LightSwitch spews out HTML5, Google spews out yet another language, Blockly

Regarding LightSwitch HTML5 output, heard this tweet by Hadi Hariri (@hhariri):

"LightSwitch now outputs in HTML 5? They didn't just kill Silverlight. They nuked it and then took a dump on it's remains"

Google new language is a visual language a la scratch and (the late) Andriod app inventor, but in a browser. I have a feeling we'll see many more of these (visual languages in the browser).

@fanbaby: Meh, except if anybody would bother to even read the announcement blog post, then you'd know that the HTML client doesn't mean any of that and is currently aimed squarely at consuming data from devices. Anyway, don't let facts get in the way. *gets popcorn*

@fanbaby: Once the best definition of a language is "à la something", its fate is not very bright. Unless an influential company puts all its weight behind it and keeps it there.

Google seems to be back at its old game of throwing random stuff around hoping that some will stick, eventually... which may be fine in other fields, but definitely not in programming languages. The canonical 10000 hours are not a figure of speech, and Google doesn't seem to be willing to put that in themselves.

I think Hadi's point is a fair one (abet a colorful one).

Having a path forward to a technology that Microsoft hasn't killed yet is a good thing and makes me want to take another look at LightSwitch. I bet the guys who came up the name for LightSwitch are kicking themselves...
