@LoadTitan: If your PC is connected directly to the Internet (or you have the ability to forward a port from your router), you can simply use the Windows built-in remote desktop. The only downside is that you must either remember your home PC's IP address or use a service like DynDNS.

You can also use something like LogMeIn as an alternative. My dad uses LogMeIn and it works very well for him.

Also, it might sound stupid, but make sure you run Windows Updates and install ALL security patches first. There have been some pre-auth kernel-mode bugs reported recently (as in last half of 2012) in the rdp driver which you really don't want getting exploited when you open up to the Internet.

Also make sure your computer doesn't have any accounts without passwords, that the guest account is disabled and that your other accounts have "good" passwords (i.e. not short or a dictionary word). Remember: If you can login remotely, so can anyone else who can guess your password - so make it hard to guess.

I don't tend to use RDP, but certainly disabling the guest account and ensuring that all accounts have good passwords is good practice for other scenarios such as people being able to walk up to your machine and immediately log in (this is the case, for example, if someone burgles your house and your machine is still on - say, because you're at work and your machine is on so you can RDP to it )
