So I'm looking for software that would be as close in features to current Mesh as possible. Cubby (https://www.cubby.com/) looks interesting - can sync arbitrary folder, has p2p sync etc.. But it's invite only, unproven and pricing is not known yet.

Then there are things like SugarSync and probably a dozen of others - actually too many to compare them all. So can anyone of you recommend a Mesh replacement that would be similarly simple yet powerful? Thanks.

Last I looked it required Java. Which rules any piece of software out for me.

It's not aimed at fast recall though. Which is an interesting idea, consider it like cloud based tape

True but for backup purposes, this is a game changer (alternatives are about 10x more expensive).

I'm moving to Windows 8 on my primary PC, and I'm also planning on doing a clean reload on my server machine with WS2012. I'm going to set up and try Cubby tonight.

A recent Skydrive update now lets you choose specific folders within Skydrive to sync.  I hear they're next going to allow you to choose specific folders to sync outside of your main Skydrive folder as well.

Biggest missing feature though is still PC->PC sync without using the cloud.  So, so much quicker when you're setting up a new PC already on your LAN and have several GB+ to sync, along with not impacting your bandwidth cap.  Really hope the Skydrive team considers adding this back from Mesh, never made much sense to "replace" Mesh with Skydrive when Skydrive was a downgrade in many aspects (the web interface is great though).

I'm pretty sure that once you got the connection set up, the packets didn't have to route through the cloud so it would transmit over your local network if you were meshsycing or whatever between two local machines.  You still needed cloud access to get the process set up, however.

The only problem with cubby is it won't let you have a shared sync folder with friends/family having different accounts, without having the data stored in the cloud.

With skydrive you can share a folder but the client won't let you sync that folder locally:(

Has anyone found other alternatives?

The other problem with cubby is after some initial beta "baiting" now it seems you will have to pay for the directsyn feature.
