So, while Apple is releasing the second generation of MagSafe, I am still waiting for other OEMs to at least copy the concept. This is a feature I always envied in Macs, how is it possible that no one else has been able to come up with aything remotely close to that?

Many users have reported (as of October 30, 2011) problems with the quality of the construction of the MagSafe cords, giving the product low marks on the Apple Store's website.[9] Common complaints include plug separating from the cord, transformer shorting, and pin springs losing elasticity.[9]
It is even possible for the adapter to spark if it touches the side of one of the aluminium MacBooks as some of the connectors are short circuited.

Possible reasons, although the real reason is probably because Apple owns a patent on it and refuses to license it.

@giovanni:
You may get your wish soon. I just read this article this morning:

@spivonious: @JeremyJ: they have patents, but people can be creative when they want. I am sure someone could think about alternative solutions. I mean, how awsome and practical would it be if contactless chargin was actually more widely available? I just want something better than my old powercord!
Edit: Edited typo

I have been using my BlackBerry PlayBook with this type of technology. Doubles as a stand as well.
I was going to paste a picture, but a paste bug is preventing me from doing that. I don't know if its Windows 8 or just this web site. Rebooting seems to fix the problem, temporarily. (closing IE fixed the problem)

I think this article summarizes well my feelings about OEMs and their lack to innovate in a meaningful way. The powercord is just one example. I am curisou to see if Vizio will in any way be able to raise the bar a little, but the company is so small I am not sure they could have an impact.

I'm sure that kettles have had magnetic power cords for quite a while before Apple came up with it.
