Emails are TINY. They were being routinely sent with little problems back when 28.8k modems were a bandwidth that far exceeded what people needed.

This pictures changes with attachments and HTML mails. And of course your loss is much bigger if the connection fails completely and you're on the cloud. (my examplen still uses pop3 connectors).
