Emails are TINY. They were being routinely sent with little problems back when 28.8k modems were a bandwidth that far exceeded what people needed.

This pictures changes with attachments and HTML mails. And of course your loss is much bigger if the connection fails completely and you're on the cloud. (my examplen still uses pop3 connectors).

99.5% uptime. Your company's Internet connection is far more likely to go down than at Microsoft's datacenters. But the difference is that Exchange server that's hosted in the cloud will continue to receive email while your connection with the server is out. If you have an on-premises Exchange server and your Internet connectivity goes out, you ain't gettin' nothin'.

The question is where you want your company's Internet connection to be. You either have your company's Internet connection between your mail client and your Exchange Server or between your Exchange Server and the rest of the world.

From a reliability standpoint, the former would be better for most companies.

Most people use Exchange in cached mode (that is the default), so it's not like you'd lose complete access to your email should you lose Internet connectivity to Office 365.

It's not like you're trying to access Gmail or Hotmail through a web browser.

Most businesses need a website anyway, and web hosters provide pop3 accounts dirt cheap with their hosting offerings:

If you have a web site, you have in most cases near unlimited pop3 accounts for free essentially. Usually they get scanned for viruses and spam too, and have almost no limits regarding attachments and e-mail size.

With a pop3 connector you have the all the benifits of on-premise Exchange and you don't lose mails if your connection goes down. And as I said, if you have a website, it's practically free.

If they are paying someone else to host it, then all of your other arguments r.e. "No company can rely on another company for infrastructure" is void, since they're already doing it.

So you get to choose: If all small companies have websites, then they either have 24/7 Internet connectivity, or they're already using the cloud.

This is bonkers. Most of these sites are business cards. Our phone number is.. and we do this and that.. also employee@company looks more professional then company@gmail.com

Oh please! If you have a sucky connection then you OF COURSE don't register the MX entry of your domain to your Exchange server.

Just as cloud computing is a very dumb idea in this case too.

Weak trolling. I am not talking about reliance on the cloud companies. If you're on the cloud and YOUR connection goes off, your FUBAR'd. Not even internal mail and calendaring is working. And if you're using cloud office, you can close shop in the downtime.

Round and round in circles we go. First these companies didn't even have Internet connections good enough to download emails from an exchange server on the Internet, then they had websites, now we're back to they have websites but the websites aren't always online.

I think the point is that if you're a CEO and you don't like the cloud, it's probably safe to say it's not because you're terrified that the Internet might turn off.

Exchange on the cloud - you have a PO box, and your calendaring is also at the post office! Together with the folder of all your mails. The guy who collects and delivers the internal mail in your office works primarily at the post office and he uses one of your cars to reach your office. If you're out of fuel, you lose all this.

Full cloud - Your PO Box, your calendar, the mail folder, the internal delivery guy AND your document folder and all your pens and typewriters are at the post office! If you run out of fuel... Your employees also need to drive cars all the time.
