pop3 & on site exchange - you have a PO box. If you run out of fuel for your car, you can't reach the PO box and can't read new mails. But mails still reach your box and you can collect them later if you get fuel.
Exchange on the cloud - you have a PO box, and your calendaring is also at the post office! The guy who collects and delivers the internal mail in your office works primarily at the post office and he uses one of your cars to reach your office. If you're out of fuel, you lose all this.
Full cloud - Your PO Box, your calendar, the internal delivery guy AND your document folder and all your pens and typewriters are at the post office! If you run out of fuel...
