Well, I have to say don't listen to me as I will only recommend some Apps that I wrote,
anyways:
Live Tile Browser (Good starting point for free Apps that also have Live tiles)
Live Tile News (Free News App with a focus on Live Tiles)
Live Tile Sports (UK oriented sports)
Congrats on your 8X!

OK, who had the book on Ian2 linking to his own apps in less than 1 hour?
I'm still using a Win7.5 phone, so my recommended apps don't take advantage of WP8:
MapSnap GPS if you like walking/hiking and already own maps.
Toilet Finder if you're out and about with young children.
I'm not involved in any of these projects, they're just ones that I tend to use.

I recommend Tip Tap Tones : Tip Tap Tones for Windows Phone helps language learners to identify the sounds and tones of Mandarin Chinese in a way that is fast, fun, and effective.
Conversing in Mandarin will be an essential skill in the near future

@Dr Herbie: MapSnap GPs looks great. I'd use a GPS (if I had a phone) in very remote places so that app would be great.
-
@dentaku: WP8 has Nokia's downloadable apps -- so if you know where you're going to be you can download the map ahead of time and you wouldn't need a data connection, just your GPS.
I think that feature, combined with MapSnap GPS would really be all you needed ...

- egads! Search is kinda necessary.
I downloaded a kindle reader for my win7phone, no searching/indexing feature, which makes using "The Flavor Bible" impossible when in the grocery store looking at today's sale items... drats!
Too much data on C9 to search? What's the problem with it?

@JohnAskew: I used the old bing api and am in the process of connecting to the new datamarket search API.
So the app crashes when you use search.
So do not use it

@Maddus Mattus: I've heard of this great search engine you could use. It's really good for videos. It's called Spectate Swamp desktop search...

@AndrewsWorld: Try Splatty! My kids did the voice overs in the game. They love hearing themsleves in a game lol.

Good choice of phone, I have the same!
For a laugh, if you have an old WP7 phone, play the game BulletAsylum on you old phone and the new. I spy hardcoded timing loops.... But does go to show how much faster the new hardware is

@PerfectPhase: I liked this post about how they moved 7.x apps to 8, and some of the stuff they found.
