Whats is the point? -- Is the operating system a literal window frame? 

A window in computer jargon is an area of the screen that is used as a drawing area. Whether you have a plain square or you warp it to look like a flag, four boxes represent four windows.

But I think the flag design was just more aesthetic.The tilt makes it seem out of place with everything else its going to look strange on buttons and in the interface.

One of the seeming interesting facts that this brings is that Windows 8 will actually be named Windows 8. Up until this point, the name was just some moniker, now it's bona fide.

Or are they going back to calling it just plain Windows, with 8 as the version?

Agreed. I think even if Microsoft marketing somehow got convinced to use a 4-leaf clover that have their leaves painted in these 4 colors, people will still accept it as new Windows logo.

What I don't get is why they needed an outside designer to come in and tell them "Why is your logo a flag? You're called Windows." Furthermore, why did they need an outside designer to design that?

Eh, it's not bad, but I agree it would've been better with the traditional four colours.

This post is just for my disappointment of not seeing 4 colors on new Windows logo. 

Unfortunately, MSFT is not a lover and stay with your taste, it is just a public company. Let's hope this so called WOA can bring us something we finally deep loving it.

The original Windows logo did not have colors either. I don't know, do the colors really matter that much?

I think the tilt fits the metro theme just fine. After all, tiles tilt when you touch/click them and apps swoop in with the same tilt when you launch them.

For me, color matters a lot. It is more fun and cheerful to look at. And it has this "diversity" feeling. I don't know what exactly it is, but, the colors just make me feel more lively.

Sorry I thought your post was sarcastic. So when you were a kid how well did you do with the toy where you put the shapes in the correct holes? One of these things is not like the other... One of these things just isn't the same....

Well, this whole thread is fairly typical:  If Apple make a change, everyone gets excited about how different and new it is; if Microsoft make a change, everyone complains about how different and new it is.

It's just a logo.

I think you guys are missing the point on the flag. Windows is Microsoft's flagship product.

After reading the Steve Jobs book about how much Job's cared about the NeXt logo and how much time/money(Millions) they spent focused on the logo I have to think Microsoft probably spent the same amount of time and effort(in today's dollars tens of millions of dollars).

The only downside to their current design is look at these two photos, which feels right today...but tomorrow will feel out dated. It's incredible to think how long the flag has been around (since the early 90s) will this new metro logo stand the test of time.

Only time will tell...

Which do you think consumers intuitively know is 'Windows'?

Interesting to think the Windows Phone logo will have to change now too for future versions.

I really think the new design costs BILLIONS of dollars in brand recognition....but with all of the efforts to change brand perceptions maybe this could be worth Billions...we just don't know...but it's new and it sure is different.

I do agree that changing the logo does kill brand recognition significantly. The logo would now even be different than what's already used on WPs (although, they'd probably change that as well after W8 release).

But one of the reasons I enjoy this logo is that it resembles where Windows is heading...an ubiquitous platform on which main user facing applications run. It's sort of fading into the background...maybe in a couple of years we won't be purchasing Windows but machines that are powered by Windows (e.g, Xbox powered by Windows). Windows as an engine that drives the next generation devices. In this sense, a departure from the well known "techy" symbol might be necessary to make way for something more modest.

I am only trying to offer personal opinion here, so don't take it too hard. But , I urge MS not going into that direction. I don't have statistic. I can only tell you from my observation to wince, that, a windows powered device that doesn't provide distinct windows experiences, is not a windows at all. Meaning, people need to be slap in the face about product brand one way or another. Just a personal opinion.
