I think BUILD will live on, since MS is clearly moving towards a common development platform between phone, PC, and Xbox.

MIX was about design...UI.....usability....natural interfaces...graphic design. I saw some in BUILD, but not to the extent you see in MIX. Last MIX I went to in 2010 was awesome...got to meet Victor Gaudioso, wicked Silverlight MVP who has since passed away, got to sit in Bill Buxton's session...mind-blowing. Was also in Vegas and I was a good boy I must say

I hope you're right on both counts. That said there is some value to more specialized conferences. I would imaging as the economy improves there may be more demand for the latter.
