Have some TV shows where I can barely hear them...would like to just run them through some volume levelling program.

My sister had the same complaint a while ago, so I showed her how to - and I provided the audio wiring for her to use an amplifier she already had. Problem solved.

If it's just a file you're playing, VLC will allow you to set your volume up to 200% with the wheel on your mouse. That's typically what I do when I can't hear a video file.
